01/13
Discuss the winners on the blog (where I also lament what became of the Globes on air) --my very brief thoughts on wins below.

Best Picture Drama

American Gangster
Atonement
Eastern Promises
The Great Debaters
Michael Clayton

The Winner
The underrated (never thought I'd say that) Atonement wins the big prize, despite its slipping status with most awards prognosticators. Will it be nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture?

The Nominations

I correctly gussed 4 and a 1/2 of the eventual 7 (eep. how dumb of the Globes to have so many). I didn't see the Into the Wild snub coming --though it seems more Oscary than Globey once you really stop to ponder--and I had Gangster as my top alternate.

If there was a pre-October surprise, I was expecting Elah or Zodiac before Eastern Promises but at least the overall Promises shout out adds a gold boost to Viggo's Oscar profile.

No Country For Old Men

There Will Be Blood

Best Picture Comedy/Musical

Across the Universe
Charlie Wilson's War
Hairspray
Juno
Sweeney Todd

The Winner
I'd consider this a big surprise. Sweeney Todd beat out everyone's darling Juno. Now normally a musical winner here isn't surprising but given that three musicals are nominated and Juno has been rising and rising: surprise.

The Nominations

I correctly gussed 3 of the 5 but I'm stunned that the roundly dissed Universe made it over massive hit Enchanted. And I'm angry (but not surprised) that the soon to be panned -- ;) -- Charlie Wilson's War made it over that little movie that could and did...superbly, too, called Once.

Best Actor Drama

 George Clooney
Michael Clayton
 Daniel Day-Lewis
There Will Be Blood
James McAvoy
Atonement
 Viggo Mortenson
Eastern Promises
Denzel Washington
American Gangster

The Winner
Daniel Day-Lewis
to no one's amazement takes it for his misanthropic oil man. If there is an Oscar ceremony (god, I hated typing that just then) he'll have another chance to thank the Academy almost 20 years after his first Oscar win.

The Nominations
I correctly guessed 4 of the 5 and am pleased that Hirsch (Into the Wild) was booted for McAvoy (Atonement) since McAvoy's performance has greater dexterity and depth. If this was the Oscar list, it'd be a beaut save for Denzel's underplayed underworked underachieving star turn. Wake up Denzel! You're usually so great. So for the Oscar lineup I'm hoping Depp (from comedy/musical) takes his spot instead of someone else's. I do expect we're seeing this category line up 4/5 with Oscars.

Best Actor Comedy/Musical

 Johnny Depp
Sweeney Todd
Ryan Gosling
Lars and the Real Girl
Tom Hanks
Charlie Wilsons War
 Phillip Seymour Hoffman
The Savages
John C Reilly
Walk Hard

The Winner
We knew that the Globes would have to give Johnny Depp an award eventually. (So weird that they haven't) and they finally did for that demon barber on fleet street.

The Nominations
I correctly guessed 4 of the 5 but I'll admit that I didn't see Reilly coming at all. Seems like they've been moving away from the purely comic for a long time. This category should be a cinch for Depp to win.

Best Actress Drama

 Cate Blanchett
Elizabeth the Golden Age
 Julie Christie
Away From Her
Jodie Foster
The Brave One
 Angelina Jolie
A Mighty Heart
Keira Knightley
Atonement

The Winner
It's been 42 years since Julie Christie won her first Oscar. The second one should be coming up next month.

The Nominations
I correctly guessed this whole damn thing but I really wished that they'd have shown more discernment and booted Blanchett for someone infinitely more deserving who would benefit from inclusion here. I understand that they need big stars to show up to their party but Blanchett was already coming! She doesn't turn down red carpet invites and she's also in the supporting category. Why the overkill when you can have mainstream friendly Ashley Judd (Bug) or win points with savvier hipper types with a ballsy bow to Tang Wei (Lust, Caution)?

Best Actress Comedy/Musical

  Amy Adams
Enchanted
Nikki Blonsky
Hairspray
Helena Bonham-Carter
Sweeney Todd
Marion Cotillard
La Vie En Rose
Ellen Page
Juno

The Winner
Even if I loved Marion Cotillard's performance (I don't) I'd cry foul here. It's neither comedic nor musical and it's a real shame that she prevented a win here from any of the other contenders (who did work within the category confines). I know that the Globes no longer act as perfect bellweathers of Oscar but Ellen Page's loss (and Juno's actually) has to be worrisome to Fox Searchlight when it comes their Oscar hopes. Best Picture is still no done deal (though all the ballots are in for Oscar so whatever will happen will happen)

The Nominations

I correctly guessed this whole field which was NOT easy to do. Very competitive category which gave the boot to actresses you would 100% surely have seen here in a weaker year. Or a smarter year when people demanded that Cotillard be deemed a dramatic performance since she neither sings nor makes jokes. No Russell for Waitress. No Kidman (Globe favorite) for Margot. No Linney (Savagaes) no Katharine Heigl (Knocked Up). A lot of people think Cotillard has this one in the bag but I don't know. I could see Adams or Page surging. Should be interesting.
