Woody used to be a favorite of the directors branch and this surprise hit is a ticket back. Plus it adds a bit of bite to this Year of Nostalgia since Woody's film finds it suspect! |
The frontrunning picture, however slim the margin, often carries the director to glory... but that's fine when the prizes are so richly deserved. |

Payne's films have historically not done as well on nomination morning as one might have expected Schmidt missing a few key nods, Sideways missing actor. But he does seem secure this year. |

| Who Got Snubbed? | ||||
 Starting with Cannes Drive's director Nicolas Winding Refn has been something of a sensation. At the very least he's jacked up his career. But Oscar wasn't ready for him. Cinephiles hoped that "persona non grata" Lars Von Trier might rise but Oscar's never taken a shine to him. His only nomination is in songwriting (hee!). If you ask the DGA they'd definitely answer with their new hero David Fincher. We've loved him since Alien3 and finally the rest of the world has caught up. |

| Who Will Win? | ||||
| Judging by precursors this contest is between Hazanavius the nostalgic trickster and Scorsese the nostalgic sentimentalist. But I wouldn't rule out Payne since he's become more and more loved with each new film. | ||||
