The Emmys have 5 bajillion categories so they can't announce them all on their PrimeTime ceremony (next Sunday! We'll live blog or something?) so last night they did their 'not ready for primetime' prizes for shows on... uh... primetime
And the winners are...
Guest Actress, Comedy: Melissa Leo as "Laurie" on Louie
Guest Actress, Drama: Carrie Preston as "Elsbeth Tascioni" on The Good Wife
Guest Actor, Comedy: Bob Newhart as "Arthur Jeffries/Professor Proton" on The Big Bang Theory
Guest Actor, Drama: Dan Bucatinsky as "James Movack" on Scandal
Voice Over: Lily Tomlin, An Apology to Elephants (HBO)
File it under "if only it were a triple crown". Before 30 Rock popularized the notion of the "EGOT", the only multi-prize haul that the general public cared about by nickname was "The Triple Crown" (Oscar, Tony, Emmy) which still makes more sense as an aspirational haul for celebrities. Anyway, Lily Tomlin adds another Emmy to her trophy haul which includes 2 Tonys and a Grammy so the only thing preventing her EGOT is that she lost the Oscar for Nashville... (sniffle).
The LEOgend, Liberace, and more more more after the jump
Meanwhile the LEOgend continues to grow. She's got an Emmy now to use as mismatched bookend for her Oscar. Not that her Oscar is on a shelf somewhere. You know she carries that swag in her bag as talisman.
Anyone else remember when Dan Bucatinsky was doing multi-hyphenate calling card work on the gay indie All Over the Guy? He's been out and proud forever and with showbiz loosening up and no longer hiding the gays away, he's reaping rewards. He's married to a filmmaker Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex, Happy Endings) and he was also instrumental in making Lisa Kudrow's wonderful Web Therapy happen so you should love him. Even if you don't watch Scandal.
Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program Heidi Klum & Tim Gunn Project Runway (Lifetime)
Casting, Drama: House of Cards (Netflix) Laray Mayfield & Julie Schubert
Casting, Comedy: 30 Rock (NBC) Jennifer McNamara-Shroff & Blichfeld+Daniels
Casting, Miniseries: Behind the Candelabra (HBO) Carmen Cuba
What finally possessed Emmy voters to pull themselves away from their sick sick sexual affair with Jeff Probst? Don't care but it's nice that Heidi & Tim, who have been making Project Runway work forever and a year with winged statues for their cheery catch-phrasey persistence and keen fashionista eyes.
Costumes for a Miniseries or Movie: Behind the Candelabra (HBO)
Costumes for a Series: The Borgias "The Gunpowder Plot" (Showtime)
Costumes for a Variety or Special - Juried Prize: [Three Winners] 55th Annual Grammy Awards (CBS), The Men Who Built American "Bloody Battles" (History), Portlandia "Blackout" (IFC)
Because the Emmys don't have enough categories. And because they aren't inconsistent enough as it is within each realm (some crafts don't worry about single vs multi-camera, some don't worry about comedy or drama, others worry about length (never girth) divvying it up by hour long vs. half hour, varieties and specials get grouped together except when they don't... IT'S A TOTAL MESS.
To make it even crazier they also have a few juried awards mixed in with the regular stuff. AMPAS is always tinkering with its rules but it's nowhere near as nonsensical nightmarish unwieldy as Emmy (or Grammy) when it comes right down to its internal structures.
Anyway moving on...
