List-Mania
Billboard the NACCP announced their annual Image Award nominations. As per usual they are extremely mainstream, so even if you have a black cast in a brilliant movie with a low profile you won't make it: The Fits didn't show up this year even though the NAACP actually has an independent film category. Instead they just doubled up with more 60% of thier Best Pic category also being nominated for Indie Film, like so:

Outstanding Independent Motion Picture
    •    "Lion" (See-Saw Films)
    •    "Loving" (Focus Features/Big Beach)
    •    "Miles Ahead" (Sony Pictures Classics)
    •    "Moonlight" (A24)
    •    "The Birth of a Nation" (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

Outstanding Motion Picture
    •    "Fences" (Paramount Pictures)
    •    "Hidden Figures" (20th Century Fox)
    •    "Loving" (Focus Features/Big Beach)
    •    "Moonlight" (A24)
    •    "The Birth of a Nation" (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

Such a shame. The Fits is awesome.

NYT Their annual "Great Performances" special is up with incredible photographs of Best Actress probables like Huppert, Negga, and Portman, as well as the three Chirons from Moonlight, and less expected choices like Royalty Hightower from The Fits (yay!) and Kristen Stewart (in general)
AAFCA The African American Film Critics Association split their prizes up amongst Moonlight, Hidden Figures, and Fences. Loving nabbed best actress for Ruth Negga
DFW the Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association handed Moonlight  Film and Director prizes today and went with all the Critics Choice favorites for acting. It's that time of year when everyone wants to start celebrating the exact same four people. It's an impulse we've never begun to understand in all our years doing this.

MADONNA IS THE QUEEN. Madonna's "Woman of the Year" speech is an absolute must-see even if you don't like her as she speaks truth to the status quo about her extraordinary career, general sexism and the music industry's ageism. (People who think the radio will still play Beyoncé in ten years time when she's 45 or so haven't been paying attention to what always happens with female singers.) And for something lighter, Madonna on Carpool Karaoke talking about Michael Jackson, being silly, and singing
