Writers Guild Nominations
Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 12:37PM
Manuel Betancourt in Adaptations, Best Original Screenplay, WGA

Manuel here bringing you the latest guild awards courtesy of the writers in the industry. As with SAG and DGA, what the writers enjoy and choose worthy of a nomination helps those of us intent on predicting the Oscars see what might be in the running not only for the screenplay categories but also what films are gaining steam enough to see the across-the-board support that nets them a Best Picture citation.

A few caveats, though. Given the Writer's Guild rules, there are a number of high profile screenplays that weren't even in the running for their award and thus their absence should in no way be taken as a slight on their quality or a notch against their potential come Oscar nomination time. As usual, animated fare and foreign language (and foreign-produced) films are the ones least likely to show up here given the eligibility requirements—one must be a member of the WGA in order to be nominated.

Without further ado, find the nominees below with some quick commentary. Scroll further down still if you want to see the TV and New Media categories which were announced back in December.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Arrival, Screenplay by Eric Heisserer; Based on the Story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang; Paramount Pictures

Deadpool, Written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick; Based on the X-Men Comic Books; Twentieth Century Fox Film

Fences, Screenplay by August Wilson; Based on his Play; Paramount Pictures

Hidden Figures, Screenplay by Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi; Based on the Book by Margot Lee Shetterly; Twentieth Century Fox Film

Nocturnal Animals, Screenplay by Tom Ford; Based on the Novel Tony and Susan by Austin Wright; Focus Features

NOT ELIGIBLE HERE SO YOU MIGHT SEE THEM AT OSCARS STILL: Elle*, Finding Dory, The Handmaiden, Krisha, Lion

(Totally Biased) Commentary: Sometimes, these eligibility issues mean that the WGA needs to go further afield with their list but that nomination for Reese & Wernick is just... wow. (Unpopular opinion: Deadpool wasn't that great. But really, the question I know we'll all be asking ourselves come Oscar nomination time is: will we forever be required to type "Oscar nominee Tom Ford" from there on out?

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Hell or High Water, Written by Taylor Sheridan; CBS Films

La La Land, Written by Damien Chazelle; Lionsgate

Loving, Written by Jeff Nichols; Focus Features

Manchester by the Sea, Written by Kenneth Lonergan; Amazon Studios/Roadside Attractions

Moonlight, Written by Barry Jenkins, Story by Tarell McCraney; A24

NOT ELIGIBLE HERE SO YOU MIGHT SEE THEM AT OSCARS STILL: Florence Foster Jenkins, The Lobster, Maggie's Plan*, Miss Sloane, Paterson, Toni Erdmann, Zootopia

(Totally Biased) Commentary: We already know two of these finalists won't make Oscar's shortlist: Jenkins' script for Moonlight and Nichols' for Loving were both deemed (accurately, I'd say) Adapted Screenplays and thus will compete in that category. That means that Chazelle, Lonergan and Sheridan (all Globe nominees) are looking pretty solid going forward. But who will fill out those other two spots? Might we be looking at Disney Animation's first ever screenplay nomination? Can Lanthimos surprise?

*As per a WGA member in our comments, turns out both Elle and Maggie's Plan were eligible. Huppert really can't catch a break with these guilds can she?

DOCUMENTARY SCREENPLAY

Author: The JT LeRoy Story, Written by Jeff Feuerzeig; Amazon Studios

Command and Control, Telescript by Robert Kenner and Eric Schlosser, Story by Brian Pearle and Kim Roberts; Based on the book Command and Control by Eric Schlosser; American Experience Films

Zero Days, Written by Alex Gibney; Magnolia Pictures

OSCAR HAS NO CATEGORY FOR DOCUMENTARY WRITING. Sad!

(Totally Biased) Commentary: Author makes sense here since it's such a writerly script (about a writer no less!) even though I was not quite taken with it. And here, not knowing what was or wasn't eligible makes it hard to ponder what got "snubbed." Either way, this is nothing but good news for Zero Days and Command and Control, both of which are on Oscar's shortlist and going head to head with some mighty competition *coughOJMadeInAmericacough*
