Streaming Roulette, Nov: The King Lives by Night
Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 10:05AM
NATHANIEL R in Amazon Prime, Criterion Channel, Farley Granger, Grease, HBO, Hulu, Netflix, Oscars (40s), The King, They Live by Night, film noir, streaming

As is our practice we've selected a handful plus of new-to-streaming titles and frozen them at utterly random moments without cheating (whatever comes up comes up!). What should you queue up for NOVEMBER 2019 ? (★ means we definitely recommend catching)

Let's get started...

-Meet me in the garden tomorrow

The Thief of Bagdad (1940) on Criterion Channel
This fantasy adventure based on The Arabian Knights won 3 Oscars in its year (Special Effects, Cinematography Color and Art Direction Color). Fill in those Oscar gaps! Weird trivia note: NONE of those categories it won had the standard 5 nominees. It took the Academy awhile to settle on the "five per category" rule that dominated the Oscars for decades. There were 14 films nominated for Special Effects that year -- the visual effects category in particular has had multiple strange incarnations and volatility.

I'm going to ask you to deliver this message to France given your... familiarity with its recipient.

The King (2019) on Netflix
Haven't yet watched this but Jason sure liked it. Timothée sounds quite threatening in this scene with the pause before "familiarity".

[no dialogue]

Gloria (2013/2014) on Amazon Prime/Hulu
If you've only seen the Julianne Moore version get yourself to the superior original starring Paulina García in an Oscar worthy turn. I still shake my head wondering what Oscar was thinking when this movie didn't even make the finalist list in Best Foreign Language Film in its year. Curiously in terms of the remake when we first saw this in 2013 we immediately pictured Annette Bening winning the Oscar for an American remake. Then it was remade (and sooner than we expected and by the same director) but not with La Bening.

My moms apple pie is better than this stuff. Wanna piece?

Grease (1978) on Netflix
Grease has sooo many sex jokes. No wonder my parents wouldn't let me see it when I was a wee kid. I know I saw it before Grease 2 arrived so I'm guessing I first watched it when it premiered on TV in 1981 with the naughtiest bits edited out. But it's one of those movies that's so embedded in pop culture it's hard to remember the first time you saw it since it feels like you've always seen it even before you have. Like Wizard of Oz or Star Wars or whatnot.

-Are you interested in that?
-What's it to you?

They Live by Night (1946) on Criterion Channel
Isn't it amazing how film noirs were so rarely respected in their day (the lack of Oscar nominations for noirs as a genre across the board is astounding) and now, apart from mainstream musicals, they're the best loved movies from the 1940s. For the record the "that" they're referring to her is beautiful bi Farley Granger (Rope, Strangers on a Train).

So the answer is 'Yes ma'am. We're always interested in that.'

ALSO STREAMING IN NOVEMBER...

If you've been waiting to order The Criterion Channel now is the time. Later this month they have multiple movies from the likes of Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, Jack Nicholson, and Peter Greenaway movies. Plus a bunch of LGBT titles and a fun collection of foodie titles for Thanksgiving.
