Welcome to March! 2019 can officially begin (heh-we're on the film calendar, not the calendar-calendar). Today is Javier Bardem's 50th birthday. Happy half-century to one of cinema's most striking faces!

HARRY BELAFONTE
Happy 92nd birthday today to the Emmy and Honorary Oscar winner. He came to fame in the 1950s as a best-selling music artist before a segueway into acting (with intermittent film and TV appearances). He also has a rich legacy as a civil rights activist. Most recently seen in BlacKkKlansman, Belafonte is a national treasure.
DAVID NIVEN
This very popular British 50s star (Around the World in 80 Days, The Moon is Blue, Pink Panther, Murder by Death, Separate Tables) had a flair for comedy and suave charm for miles. He's also the only person to ever win the Oscar (Separate Tables) while hosting the Oscars.
LUPITA NYONG'O
Is anymore more "star of right now" than Lupita Nyong'o? She's a gift. Remember that awful period immediately post her Oscar win when no one seemed to be hiring her. That was so weird. Next up: Us.
RUSSELL WONG
He made his name in 90s and 00s cinema (Eat a Bowl of Tea, The Joy Luck Club, Romeo Must Die, Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) and the TV series "Vanishing Son". You can mostly spot him in TV guest spots now.
DIRK BENEDICT
You have to be of a certain age for this one but Dirk Benedict had so much swagger in 1970s/1980s television that when they rebooted his two most famous roles in the Aughts they had to find people with as much cocky screen charisma as Katee Sackhoff ("Starbuck" on Battlestar Galactica) and Bradley Cooper ("Face" in The A-Team) to replace him.
KIM MIN-HEE
Actress/model, Current muse of Hong Sang-soo, star of the luscious awesome South Korean hit The Handmaiden (2016), and the first Korean Actress ever to win the Silver Bear at Berlinale (On the Beach at Night Alone).
JOACHIM TRIER
Norway's Best Director. See: Reprise (2006), Oslo August 31st (2011), and Thelma (2017). Tall, handsome, super gifted. The only thing wrong with him is that he doesn't work fast! Speed it up, Joachim. No more 5-6 years between pictures is too long.
CHRIS EIGEMAN
Whit Stilman regular/90s indie star turned director. Full confession: we once played poker with Eigemann at a film festival. He read TFE back in the day so if he's still reading, 'hi Chris!'
FREDERIC CHOPIN
The classical composer. (This was basically an excuse to post a picture of Hugh Grant as Chopin in Impromptu (1991) which is a really fun movie if you ever get a chance to see it -- not a stuffy biopic but a comedy about famous composers/writers in the 19th century.
