Big Little Lies "The Bad Mother"

"It's actually uncanny how much the dropoff in quality mirrors Game of Thrones. Juicy work of fiction is adapted—acclaim, success, perfection!  Showrunner runs out of book to adapt. Source author writes an outline for how the plot advances. Showrunner adapts outline into new season. It's a terrible recipe!" - H

"I don’t think Kidman deserves a second Emmy... I feel like her performance is really inconsistent this season." -Beyaccount

Last chance to vote on the 2001 Smackdown

We're finally recording the 2001 Supporting Actress Smackdown tomorrow. So if you'd like your votes counted, make sure to email your ratings (1 to 5 hearts) on each of the nominees before Sunday night: Dames, Maggie & Helen, from Gosford Park, Kate Winslet from Iris, Marisa Tomei from In the Bedroom and Jennnifer Connelly in A Beautiful Mind. The Smackdown and its companion podcast will be posted sometime midweek. Apologies for the delay but that just gives you more time to vote. xo

[The following Smackdown, featuring the year 1960, will take place on Sunday July 14th]

My personal ranking of the nominees:

1. Mirren
2. Winslet
3. Tomei
4. Smith
5. Connelly

It's been too long since I've seen these for me to feel confident voting, but I DO wish heartily that more gays would watch Gosford Park so Dame Maggie's "Difficult colour, green...very tricky" could take its rightful place in the catchphrase canon.

Rewatching the 2001 nominees in anticipation while a great list of actresses it's not a great list of performances in my opinion. Tomei towers above them all for me. Will be interested to see the panel's thoughts on these women.

I enjoy/ love all of these actresses and their performances in their respective nominated films. It's hard to rank...

1. Connelly
2. Tomei
3. Mirren
4. Winslet
5. Smith

1. Tomei
2. Smith
3. Mirren
4. Winslet
5. Connelly

I felt in 2001 as I do now that Connelly is the weakest of the nominees.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

June 15, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

I love how divisive Connelly's performance is in these comments. It's either first or last on every list. Reminds me of Zellweger in Cold Mountain.

June 15, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCash

Ooh, 1960! Did "Dark at the top of the stairs" turn up somewhere?

June 15, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterDave S.

Winslets Performance is sooo underrated here as always! For me its her or Tomei for the win for sure.

Am I the only One to find Mirren here way more wortiher then in The Queen? (Judi Dench should won in that year)

June 15, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPatrick

Jennifer Connelly's ranking either first or dead last here, in the comments, is the most fascinating outcome (for me). I'd rank them so:

1. Mirren
2. Tomei
3. Winslet
4. Smith
5. Connelly

(Connelly should've been nominated, maybe even won, for Requiem for a Dream, the year prior. She *is* talented but has seemed to have lost her mojo, big time, over the years.)

I treasure Tomei's three nominations and am so, so, so glad she is an Oscar winner -- regardless of which performance of hers.

My rank:

Mirren
Winslet
Connelly
Tomei
Smith

Fav MIA: Paltrow (TRT), Blanchett (Galadriel), Kristin Scott Thomas (Gosford Park)

June 15, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMirko

Yay! So excited to finally see what the results are. Can't wait! My ranking would be:

Winslet
Mirren
-
Smith
-
Tomei
-
Connelly

@Dave S. Same! Top of the Stairs seems so ridiculously inaccessible, I hope I won't have to buy the disk to play along. Any ideas on where to rent it digitally - or rent it period, since my library seems like it's struggling with this one - would be super appreciated.

June 15, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterNick T

I think they nominated the wrong women from Gosford Park. I would have gone with Emily Watson and Kristin Scott Thomas instead.

But from the Academy’s nominees I’d definitely go with Marisa Tomei.

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter7bis

I think the field is strong and Connelly coming last is not a reflection on her performance, the thing is here that they're all truly supporting, arguments could be made for Connelly as Lead but it's Crowe's film.

Connelly was very good in a film no one saw a cpl of years ago called Only The Brave she had some great husband and wife chemsitry with Josh Brolin so you felt her loss at the finale.

I feel sorry she's appearing in Alita when she has much more as an actress in her.

I think she also should have made the 2000 S/Actress lineup and also the 2003 B/Actress line up.

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Tomei for sure!

The lineup is really strong!

"Green is such a difficult color"

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterManuel

Yeah, I think Tomei will win the smackdown by a longshot. I also agree that Winslet is stronger than the race in 2001 would have suggested. She's great in a meh Miramax oscar bait film. I think last place will be either Smith or Connelly.

So who would get the boot for Cameron Diaz in Vanilla Sky? Personally, I think Connelly is by far #5.

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCharlea

2001 has plenty of viable alternates inc Paltrow,Flannagan,Diaz,Dench,Scott Thomas,Harring,Barrymore,Johansson,McDormand,Huston,,Watson,Fanning,O'Connor and then Blanchett twice.

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

1. Tomei
2. Mirren
3.Winslet
4. Smith
5. Connelly

TBH none of these performances other than Tomei struck me as truly memorable but all were solid. I recall Connelly's performance as being somewhere between lead and supporting and though I like her, she was stuck with the fairly thankless Supportive Wife role (not unlike Kathleen Quinlan in Ron Howard's Apollo 13 - Howard's not exactly a trailblazer for meaty parts for women, is he).

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRob

Winslet
Tomei
Connelly
Smith
Mirren

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPaulo

1. Mirren
2. Tomei
3. Connolly
4. Smith

unseen: Winslet

disclosure: It’s been a good while since I’ve seen these films. I barely remember Maggie, for instamce. But ai remember being absolutely blown away be Mirren.

Connolly is underrated here. For all the hoopla at the time re: category fraud, in retrospect, she is very much supporting. the film is all about Crowe.

trivia: is this the film Bettany and Connoly met eachother on? or were they already married?

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterhuh

"She's great in a meh Miramax oscar bait film."

I love that description, Charlea! Meh Miramax Oscar Bait Film was an actual *genre* in from the mid-90s well into the aughts.

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRob

2001 was such a groundbreaking year for film
Schizophrenia mathematicians
Hobbits
French sex
British families
And scary bedrooms

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

I said before and I say it again Winslet is the most Overrated actress EVER (With the other Cate...)

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

I think I should also put a good word in for Alikina Mann & Fionula Flannigan (The Others), Anne Alvaro (The Taste of Others), Kelly MacDonald (Gosford Park - and better than the two nominees), Ileana Douglas & Scarlett Johansson (Ghost World), Arsinee Kanijian (Fat Girl)

I also agree that the wrong women from Gosford Park were nominated; Smith and Mirren did nothing distinctive (I've a problem w/all of Mirren's nominated roles).

it's Winslet or Tomei.

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAlfred

Tomei, who's frequently marvelous, was especially so in "In the Bedroom". A richly deserved nomination. But I'd have substituted her co-nominees with the following four:

Fionulla Flanagan "The Others"
Angelica Huston "The Royal Tenenbaums"
Mary McDonnell "Donnie Darko"
Emily Watson "Gosford Park"

An epic field (and if it had been extended to six I'd include Analika Mann, so great in "The Others". But in the end I think I'd have given the big prize to McDonnell.

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterKen

1. Tomei
2. Mirren
3. Winslet
4. Smith
5. Connelly

I remember seeing In The Bedroom and thinking it such a wonderful film, and being stirred especially by Marisa Tomei's performance. I generally rave over Kate Winslet but don't remember her as being particularly wonderful in Iris. (She richly deserved an Oscar for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, imho). It was refreshing to see Helen Mirren play a "dark" character.

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterrrrich7

With regards to 'Gosford Park' I actually think Kristin Scott Thomas, Emily Watson, Kelly Macdonald, Eileen Atkins and the two nominated ladies were ALL nomination worthy.

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterevangelina

With Gosford Park, I wish Kelly MacDonald had gotten more traction. She serves as the audience's eyes and she gives the best performance.

I did not like Iris at all. I thought the movie actually kind of exploits her by giving her nothing but nude scenes but no scenes of her writing. I don't even remember her holding a pen in the movie.

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterTom G.

1. Tomei

2. Mirren

3. Smith

4. Connelly

5. Winslet

June 16, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterDeivith

I think it's easy to forget that this was the first of Smith's many dowager countesses and the sheer joy and sparkle of her performance can't be overlooked. Three standouts.

'Green is such a difficult colour'

To the American actor 'It must be so difficult when something flops like that'

'Oh, but why? None of us will see it!'

Iconic - Mirren deserved it but I would have slipped Emily Watson in here too.

Tomei and Winslet deserved the nomination, Connelly was good but it was a make-uo for Requiem the year before...
