Happy Phil Stern Centennial! "who?" you say? Phil Stern, you philistines! He's one of the great Hollywood photographers. He lived a very long life, dying just 5 years ago at 95 years young but his work was largely before our time. We grew up with Herb Ritts and Annie Liebovitz as the biggest names in celebrity photoshoots but as long as Movie Stars have existed there have been artists behind the camera helping to mythologize them. Stern was one of the key idolmakers from 20th century showbiz though celebrity shots weren't his only claim to fame having also been a war photographer.

After the jump 14 other images from Stern's vast portfolio that we adore...

Charlton HestonAn image we couldn't possibly love more of Rita Moreno rehearsing West Side Story How great is this shot of the Hitchcocks with the Marnie script?
Surely the greatest shot of Marlon Brando with his Oscar ever takenSophia Loren on set

We love it when photographers shoot other photographers. Here's an appropriately moody image of the great cinematographer James Wong HoweA great shot of Judy Ga cheekily funny portrait of Anita Ekberg refusing to be photographeda playful shot of Tony Perkins Audrey Hepburn and her husband Mel FerrerStern was particularly skilled with James Dean and this is one of his most iconic portraits, we grew up seeing this image licensed for everything
