If you're a faithful reader of TFE you know that we're fans of the songwriting duo "Mizer & Moore" who wrote the songs for this season of Marvelous Mrs Maisel. Tom, the lyricist half of the duo, recently served on the panel of our Supporting Actress Smackdown of 1947 and then guest blogged for a day here at TFE to tell us about his Maisel experience and other movie musical interests. Naturally we were thrilled when he snagged his first Emmy nomination and called him right up...
NATHANIEL: Congratulations. I am doing a little happy dance for you in my chair as I type away about the Emmys. We've on this journey with you, at least in spirit (socially distanced!) for so long now. Are you shocked? thrilled? humbled? already exhausted by well wishers?
TOM: Thank you so much! Sharing just a bit of this madness with you and your smart, supportive readers has been a thrill given I’ve been reading The Film Experience forever. It’s surreal to be on the “other side”...
I’m feeling humbled and a little dazed. Didn’t have time to celebrate exactly because there have been phone calls and people to thank—and I had to write one of those odd “I heard while making eggs because I forgot it was today but I'm so grateful" statements you see everywhere.
Plus, look at the other amazing people in our category. I’m a music theater nerd and I’m on a list with Pharrell and Trent Reznor!!! I mean, what is that?
TOM: Honestly, the biggest thing is hopefully more people check out our work and we get to keep doing what we love. That would be the best reward of all. That and a picture with Pharrell and Trent Reznor.
NATHANIEL: Good times. At any rate an Emmy nomination surely can't hurt in your goal for Barbra Streisand to become aware of your existence again? Or to eventually sing one of your songs.
TOM: From your lips, to our goddess’ ears. Now if only the Emmy’s were a big event this year and they could do an Oscar style medly of the songs. Who would you want us to request?
NATHANIEL: Hmmm. my heart is always with Jonathan Groff for beautiful gay male voices (and we'd want to stick to that to honor the Maisel character who sings the songs). But there's also actual Emmy winner Billy Porter who has killer pipes and would be there anyway in this dream scenario.
On the other hand, with social distancing and all of that, are there no tux rentals in your future? Or will you just wear half a tux in case of a Zoom acceptance speech?
TOM: That is the ultimate irony, isn’t it? Here I am, the kid who was OBSESSED with awards ceremonies and parties and the one year I’m invited, there likely won’t be any.
Zoom it is. Lesson to be more specific with what you put on your vision board. (And yes to Jonathan or Billy. They are both incredible. Though I kind of want Billy to sing "No One Has to Know.") But I won’t complain.
Now, if only I can get my dog to pic our song out of the nominee stack...
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 3 is currently streaming on Amazon. Meanwhile Mizer & Moore are busy adapting movies into musicals!
