The Grammys have almost 90 categories so it can get very difficult to track them all. "Complete lists of winners" around the web are usually missing several if not 2/3rds of the actual winners. The list which follows in this post is also probably not complete though we tried by pooling from different sources. We only care about the Grammys very selectively since we're focused on the actors mediums (film, tv, stage) so the "Triple Crown" has always been cooler to us than the EGOT. Neverthless, there are some venn diagram overlaps between our concerns and the Grammys since at least a few actors are nominated each year for something or another. What's more, despite the remake of West Side Story being up for several Oscars, it essentially got a better tribute at the Grammys. That came by way of a truly stirring "In Memoriam" presentation which ended, reverently, with the late great Stephen Sondheim.
So who got closer to an EGOT last night, even if they're still very far away? Find out after the jump...
• Andra Day, who received a Golden Globe statue and an Oscar nomination for her debut role in United States vs Billie Holiday won a "Compilation Soundtrack" Grammy, which was her third Grammy nomination overall. This album was also nominated in our own annual Film Bitch Awards.
• Don Cheadle won a Spoken Word Grammy for the audiobook on John Lewis' life. It's strangely Cheadle's first of the four major Showbiz Trophies (the others being the Emmy, Oscar, and Tony of course) despite having a lot of Emmy nominations and one Oscar previous Oscar bid.
• Disgraced comedian/actor Louis C.K. took the Grammy for Comedy Album, which got social media all riled up, so he's now halfway to an EGOT... not that halfway is close or that he'll ever get there.
• Questlove won a Grammy just one week after winning an Oscar for the same achievement, the documentary Summer of Soul.
• Bo Burnham, who had already won an Emmy, is also now halfway to an EGOT. He is infinitely more likely to finish it, though, since he is truly a man of multi-hyphenate talents: he acts, he screenwrites, he directs, he produces. His Grammy is for "Song Written For Visual Media" for his special Bo Burnham Inside which we've talked about a few times here.
• And the night's big winner was Jon Batiste. He won the top category for his album "We Are" but he also picked up a Grammy for the score of Soul, which had already won him an Oscar.
• Lady Gaga collected her lucky 13th Grammy, this time for Traditional Pop Vocal Album "Love For Sale" with Tony Bennett. She's won in the following nine categories: Pop Vocal Album, Pop Solo Performance (2 times... but once when the category was still gendered), Pop Duo/Group Performance (2 times), Dance Recording, Electronic/Dance Album, Compilation Soundtrack, Song Written For Visual Media (3 times), Music Video and Traditional Pop Vocal Album (2 times... both for duet albums with Tony Bennett)
