Complete Emmy Nominations

NATHANIEL R in Emmys, JB Smoove, Melissa Fumero, TV

by Nathaniel R and Christopher James

JB Smoove and Melissa Fumero (who will soon be costarring in a Netflix show called Blockbuster) announced the Emmy nominations this morning. They started with a brief "bit" where they held JB's Emmy like it was a crying fragile infant before getting down to swift business with the headline categories (they did not announce supporting categories live just leads and series. True to the Television Academy's form, it was mostly a case of their old favourites landing in big categories even if the season or show in question wasn't as heralded as usual (hi Killing Eve in the acting categories or Sarah Paulson breaking through the super-stacked Best Actress Limited Series category for a performance nobody had talked about for months).

One of the most interesting things about the nominations was that recency bias paid off in the series categories but did NOT pay off in Limited Series where almost all of the nominees came from the fall/winter... as if the voters just couldn't sift through the spring/summer glut of programming. We'll review several categories at length over the next two months (the Emmys are on September 12th) but after the jump the  nomination list with a few comments and how well we did on our predictions...

How did we do on our predictions? Christopher James scored the best with 73% predictions correct, Claudio just behind with 69% and Nathaniel and Abe tied for third place with 65%. Congrats, Chris!

Nomination Leaders and Losers: Succession led all drama programming with 25 Emmy nominations. Ted Lasso led the comedies with 20 nominations (with Hacks and Only Murders close behind with 17 each). The White Lotus led all limited series with 20 nods. The losers were "final seasons" with This is Us, Black-ish, Insecure  failing to make significant showings despite taking their final bows. Ozark, with a shorter run, escaped this fate.

Snubbees: Too many shows to list of course but the most high profile critical darling to fare poorly was Pachinko, though it did score a single nomination for Main Title Design.

LIMITED SERIES / TV MOVIE

OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES

A big surprise to see Maid passed over here (all four of us predicted it) for the less critically embraced Inventing Anna. And for none of the late openers (Under the Banner of Heaven / The Staircase, etcetera) to place. The team majorly face-planted here with no one predicting either Inventing Anna OR Pam & Tommy.

OUTSTANDING TV MOVIE

None of us predicted Reno 911! to place but all of us predicted The Fallout (which was left out). Oops.

LEAD ACTRESS, LIMITED SERIES

Sarah Paulson was the big surprise here (especially since the talk about her performance largely landed on the controversial fatsuit). It was not a good morning for movie stars moonlighting in TV series as Michelle Pfeiffer, Julia Roberts, Viola Davis, and Jessica Chastain were all passed over for high profile work. (Nathaniel was the only one to predict Toni Collette but none of us saw Sarah Paulson coming.)

LEAD ACTOR, LIMITED SERIES

Ths big snub here was Ben Foster who won raves for the movie The Survivor, but more and more voters just aren't watching telefilms, prefering limited series. Samuel L Jackson, hot off his Honorary Oscar was predicted in several quarters of the internet for Last Days of Ptolemy Grey but that didn't happen either. (None of us predicted Patel or Stan here. Whoops.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, LIMITED/MOVIE

We didn't see the complete dominance of White Lotus coming (though we're thrilled at the Natasha Rothwell nomination!). Chris was the only one to correctly predict Mare Winningham for Dopesick. The whole team predicted Andie Macdowell for Maid but she was shut-out, despite the fun narrative of playing onscreen mom to her real life daughter Margaret Qualley.

SUPPORTING ACTOR, LIMITED / MOVIE

None of us saw Seth Rogen coming (is it because he was the dullest part of Pam & Tommy and we kept wanting to get back to the titular characters?). Nathaniel and Chris both were the sole predictors of Will Poulter and Jake Lacy, respectively. The surprise snub here was Naveen Andrews for The Dropout, whom literally all of us here at TFE and most pundits around the web were predicting.

DRAMA

DRAMA SERIES

The five most widely expected series were nominated but it was bad news for the sixth and final season of once Emmy popular This is Us which didn't place. One of TV's most popular series, Yellowstone, was also passed over. Cláudio was the only one of us to predict Euphoria but we're thrilled to see it in the lineup after its miss last season.

LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA

Mandy Moore was widely expected to get a goodbye nomination for This is Us but that didn't happen. Interestingly the voters went with Reese Witherspoon instead of  Aniston for The Morning Show (a twist none of us predicted). The mild surprise was Killing Eve getting two slots despite a final season that seemed to please approximately no one (except Emmy voters)

LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA

A largely expected list apart but for the absence of Sterling K Brown, who has been nominated for every other season of This is Us

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA

Burned by five seasons of snubs for Rhea Seehorn none of us predicted her. But it was finally her time for Better Call Saul. This is the acting category that Team Experience had the best prediction statistics in this season. It's worth noting here that neither of the oft-predicted (here and elsewhere Stranger Things actresses (Sadie Sink and Millie Bobbie Brown) showed up. Stranger Things scored no acting nominations this season but it did score in other big ticket places like Series despite having its most over produced, most overly plotted most repetitive season ever.

SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA

We unaninomously had faith in Giancarlo Esposito for Better Call Saul but he was left out! None of us predicted Christopher Walken and in hindsight perhaps that was silly given how memorable he was (albeit in a small role) in Severance.

GUEST ACTRESS, DRAMA

Thrilled to see Martha Kelly's deadpan drug dealer here from Euphoria , proving her very singular acting style can meet the demands of drama just as well as its always met the demands of comedy.

GUEST ACTOR, DRAMA

The guest categories are a joke given that they're not juried and are thus invariably dominated by just the most popular shows of the moment, regardless of performance quality. That said it's a strong category this year. Thrilled for Colman Domingo's nomination in particular as he is extraordinary in that recurring role in Euphoria  and his submitted episode was a major highlight of this second season.

CASTING, DRAMA SERIES

We've always been curious about shows getting casting nominations well into their run (hello Ozark and Stranger Things -why) as this category should be dominated by new shows each year. There weren't many new characters in Stranger Things season 4 and the newbies definitely weren't the highlights apart from the villain.

COMEDY

COMEDY SERIES

What We Do in the Shadows managed to hold on to its fans despite little Emmy buzz (and an early release), and Curb Your Enthusiasm didn't spoil its record for being nominated for its every season no matter how long its been off the air, effectively blocking the surging The Great (which landed in both lead categories) from competing. Critics won't be pleased that Reservation Dogs is missing.

LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY

Tough break for Selena Gomez, despite being in the buzzies show (Only Murders). Critical darling Sarah Lanchashire (Julia) also didn't place.

LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY

Anthony Anderson has previously been nominated for every season of Black-ish but that streak ended. Sad that the men of What We Do in the Shadows can't get arrested!

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY

Though none of us predicted her, it's thrilling to see Sarah Niles land a nomination for her psychiatrist on Ted Lasso. She was such an ingenious addition to Ted Lasso in its second season and such a different flavor for the show (mellow, reserved, and lacking in sentiment) while still contributing to the overall optimism and sweetness of the show. This category would be simply the best if they could  a) make Saturday Night Live ineligible again -- McKinnon is always great but it's just not what the category is meant for -- and b) denounce  blatant category fraud like Hannah Einbinder (fabulous on the show but inarguably a lead). Nathaniel was the only pundit here to predict Sheryl Lee Ralph but we were mostly got this one right apart from Sarah Niles.

SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY

None of us predicted Tyler James Williams or Toheeb Jimoh but it wasn't from lack of worthiness but lack of name recognition. Toheeb Jimoh in particular was a major MVP of his season with Lasso smartly expanding its focus to become even more of an ensemble show. Very happy to see them both nominated! Now if only voters  could move on from their default Tony Shalhoub obsession (12 nominations and 4 wins in the past 19 years!)

GUEST ACTRESS, COMEDY SERIES

Hacks thoroughly dominating. But speaking personally (it's Nathaniel) I would have only nominated Harriet Samson Harris despite thoroughly loving Hacks. Four nominations from Hacks and yet they missed its second best submission in this particular category (Ming-Na Wen as a grudge-holding talent manager). We have to assume Olson's inclusion in particular is an apology for missing a supporting actress nomination for Season 1 in which she was fabulous (she was barely in Season 2 and her screen husband was the focus of her episode).

GUEST ACTOR, COMEDY SERIES

It's exceedingly rare to see such Saturday Night Live restraint in the guest comedy categories. Only 1 of the 12 nominees was from SNL which has not happened in as long as we can recall... possibly ever. We tried to find a year but after going back over 12 years still couldn't find one. (there's usually 3-4 nominees from SNL.)
