It's Friday which means NEW STUFF. There's quite a lot arriving today in US theaters so are you moviegoing this weekend? Here's what's playing. If there's a link we've reviewed it.
NEW ON IMAX SCREENS
- Moonage Daydream - Glenn calls this David Bowie experiential doc "exhilarating" and we have our tickets in hand for tonight (albeit at one of those fake IMAX screens...sigh. The real ones are so few and hard to get good seats for.)
NEW IN WIDE RELEASE...
- Pearl - A prequel to the horror film "X" starring Mia Goth
- Running the Bases - one of those faith-based movies, this one a baseball drama obviously
- See How They Run - Saiorse Ronan and Sam Rockwell headline this comic mystery
- The Woman King - This action drama starring Viola Davis, John Boyega, and a who's who of rising black actresses is expected to top the box office this weekend. Baby Clyde calls it "a fantastic historical action drama the likes of which you’ve never seen before".
To make room for these the following pictures lost lots of screens today: The Invitation, Spider-Man No Way Home (re-release), Jaws (re-release), Thor: Love and Thunder, Nope, Elvis, Orphan First Kill, Three Thousand Years of Longing, Gigi & Nate, Breaking, and Beast so consider it "last call" for all of those if you've been meaning to go.
NEW IN LIMITED RELEASE
- Blonde -(extremely limited) This controversial Marilyn Monroe bio starring Ana de Armas will hit Netflix on September 28th but first it gets one of those tiny Oscar qualifying runs in theaters. Elisa didn't care for it at Venice.
- Confess Fletch -(hundreds of theaters) Rebooting the Fletch comedy franchise with Jon Hamm taking over the Chevy Chase role
- God's Country -(hundreds of theaters) Thandiwe Newton is threatened by new neighbors in this slow-burn thriller which Matt called "remarkable" at Sundance.
- Riotsville USA -(extremely limited) A doc about a fake town built as training ground for law enforcement officers.
- The Silent Twins -(hundreds of theaters) Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrence star in this true story about sisters who abruptly stopped speaking (except for to each other) in the UK. Elisa called it "truly emotionally vivid" in her Cannes review
