While we never do much coverage of the Grammys (they aren't the Oscars!) we do like to share a few details whenever nominations arrive. A few categories always overlap with things we love (film, tv, stage). And truth be told I've experienced a strange reinassance in terms of listening to new music this past year so I'm more interested than usual. Here are the nominees for the top prizes at the 67th Grammys which will take place on February 2nd 2025. Beyonce leads the pack (as per usual) and extends her own record of Most Nominated Artist Ever...
ALBUM OF THE YEAR
"brat" -Charli XCX has 7 nods this year
"Cowboy Carter" -Beyonce has 11 nominations this year extending her own record of all time most nominated to a headspinning 99 honors.
"Djesse Vol 4" - Jacob Collier
"Hit Me Hard and Soft" - Billie Eilish has 7 nods this time. She's a Grammys favourite and she's the first artist in history to have her first three albums all nominated in the top category.
"New Blue Sun" - Andre 3000
"The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess" - Chappell Roan
"Short n' Sweet" - Sabrina Carpenter
"The Tortured Poets Department"- Taylor Swift has only ("only") 6 nods this year but this nomination means she's the only female artist in history to have scored 7 nominations in Grammy's top category.
Because the Grammys have a nearly infinite amount of categories the nominees in this category are usually also up for another 'album' honor in a subcategory. In this case that breaks down like so: Pop Vocal Album (Billie, Chappell, Sabrina, Taylor) Dance Electronic Album (Charlie) and Alternative Jazz Album (Andre)... though we didn't see where or if Jacob Collier's album placed elsewhere but there are so many album categories it's possible we scrolled right past it.
Surprises? Some people expected Ariana Grande to land here with "Eternal Sunshine". She had to settle for Pop Vocal Album nod instead. All of her competitors in that category made the list here.
And the three other most high profile categories...
RECORD OF THE YEAR for performers
"360" - Charli XCX
"Birds of a Feather" - Billie Eilish
"Espresso" - Sabrina Carpenter
"Fortnight" - Taylor Swift featuring Post Malone
"Good Luck Babe" -boygenius
"Not Like Us" -Kendrick Lamar
"Now & Then" - The Beatles
"Texas Hold 'Em" - Beyonce
I expected to see Benson Boone's hit "Beautiful Things" here but he had to settle for a Best New Artist nod.
SONG OF THE YEAR for songwriters
"A Bar Song (Tipsy)" -Shaboozey
"Birds of a Feather" - Billie Eilish
"Die With a Smile" - Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars
"Fortnight" - Taylor Swift featuring Post Malone
"Good Luck Babe" -boygenius
"Not Like Us" -Kendrick Lamar
"Please Please Please" - Sabrina Carpenter
"Texas Hold 'Em" - Beyonce
The songs to make this list but NOT the best record list are the longlasting chart topper "A Bar Song (Tipsy)", the duet "Die With a Smile" and "Please Please Please" swapped in (instead of "Espresso") for Sabrina Carpenter.
BEST NEW ARTIST
Benson Boone
Doechii (3 overall nominations)
Chappell Roan (6 overall nominations)
Khruangbin
Raye
Sabrina Carpenter (6 overall nominations)
Shaboozey (5 overall nominations)
Teddy Swims
Rooting for Chappell Roan here and everywhere else essentialy. But have you heard Raye's song "Oscar Winning Tears"? It is brilliant.
SO WITH THE FOUR 'TOP' CATEGORIES OUT OF THE WAY
Here are the categories for those of us who are into the acting arts (film, tv, stage)
MUSICAL THEATER ALBUM
Hell's Kitchen
Merrily We Roll Along
The Notebook
The Outsiders
Suffs
The Wiz
Interesting to see The Wiz make it since the reviews were harsh and it closed quickly. Suffs won Score at the Tonys, The Outsiders won Best Musical, and Merrily We Roll Again won Best Revival. The winner could be any of them or it might also be the jukebox musical Hell's Kitchen since the Grammys are most familiar with Alicia Keys from this grouping.
COMEDY ALBUM
"Armageddon" - Ricky Gervais
"The Dreamer" - Dave Chappelle
"The Prisoner" -Jim Gaffigan
"Someday You'll Die" - Nikki Glaser
"Where Was I" - Trevor Noah
Trevor Noah and Dave Chappelle were also nominated last year for different albums.
AUDIO BOOK NARRATION
"All You Need is Love: The Beatles in Their Own Words" - Various Artists
...And Your Ass Will Follow" - George Clinton
"Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones" - Dolly Parton
"My Name is Barbra" - Barbra Streisand
"Last Sundays in Plains: A Centennial Celebration" - Jimmy Carter
Dolly Parton had had 10 wins across her career. We suspect Barbra Streisand is winning this category though (which would be her 9th Grammy) for reading her memoir.
BEST MUSIC FILM
American Symphony - Jon Baptiste
The Greatest Night in Pop - Various Artists
June - June Carter Cash
Kings from Queens - Run DMC
Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple - Steven Van Zandt
BEST MUSIC VIDEO
Hmmm. What'cha think of these choices?

"Deadpool & Wolverine" - Various Artists
"Maestro: The Music of Leonard Bernstein" - Bradley Cooper, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, and London Symphony Orchestra
"Saltburn" - Various Artists
"Twisters: The Album" - Various Artists
BEST SCORE SOUNDTRACK FOR VISUAL MEDIA
"American Fiction" - Laura Karpman
"Challengers" - Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
"The Color Purple" - Kris Bowers
"Dune Part Two" - Hans Zimmer
"Shogun" - Nick Chuba, Atticus Ross, Trent Reznor
BEST SONG WRITTEN FOR VISUAL MEDIA
"Aint No Love in Oklahoma" - Luke Combs from Twisters
"Better Place" - Nsync & Justin Timberlake from Trolls Band Together
"Can't Catch Me Now" - Olivia Rodrigo from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes
"It Never Went Away" - Jon Baptiste from American Symphony
"Love Will Survive" - Barbra Streisand from The Tattooist of Auschwitz
Last year this was far more Oscar adjacent but since most of these songs were eligible a year ago they won't be in the mix in the upcoming Oscar race.
Some random favourite nominations elsewhere
Best Recording Package -"brat" Charli XCX
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance - "Guess" Charli XCX featuring Billie Eilish (cannot get enough of this song/video)
Best Dance Pop Recording - "Got Me Started" Troye Sivan
Best Alternative Jazz Album - "No More Water" Meshell Ndegeocello (just the other day I was wondering what happened to her. Now I'll have to listen)
Best Country Song - "The Architect" Kacey Musgraves (such a beautiful song)
Best Country Duo/Group Performance - "II Most Wanted" - Beyonce & Miley Cyrus (love)
Best Historical Album "Rodgers & Hammerstein & Julie Andrews- The Sound of Music" Super Deluxe Edition (wouldn't it be fun to see Julie Andrews win again? She has only two Grammys. One for Spoken Word for Children 14 years ago and the other won for Best Recording for Children for Mary Poppins way back at the 7th annual Grammy Awards.
