The 14th Annual Team Experience Awards: "OBAA" and "Sinners" lead the nominations
by Cláudio Alves
SINNERS | © Warner Bros.
One Battle After Another and Sinners lead the 14th annual Team Experience Award nominations. Both films scored twelve nods each, a bit below their Oscar haul in the horror flick’s case, but still respectable. However, neither beat the Team Experience Awards record set by The Favourite, which scored 13 nominations in 2019. As ever, it’s worth reminding that these honors are voted on by The Film Experience writers, excluding Nathaniel, who does his own Film Bitch Awards, wholly separate from this list. He probably wouldn’t have allowed the tie that expands this year’s Best Director roster to six slots. Oh well, it’s more cinema to celebrate, more artistry to cheer and applaud. So, let’s get to it!

FUN FACTS & FIGURES
- In total, 49 films received votes in the Best Picture category.
- In total, 82 performances received votes across the four acting categories.
- Across these 20 categories, the Team Experience managed to recognize 44 features. The numbers are down from last year's 47. It is, however, significantly more than the Academy, whose voting body nominated a grand total of 35 feature films.
- With twelve nominations each, One Battle After Another and Sinners are this year's nomination leaders. Last year, this honor belonged to The Brutalist, with seven nods to its name.
- Among individuals, Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Kleber Mendonça Filho, and Park Chan-wook are the most recognized, scoring citations for directing, writing, and producing their projects.
- Notably, The Voice of Hind Rajab follows in the steps of Close Your Eyes and Alcarrás by scoring a Team Experience nomination in Best Picture and nowhere else.
- With four nominations across the board, Frankenstein is the most nominated film out of the Best Picture race.
- Category confusion strikes again! Paul Mescal, Josh O’Connor and Stellan Skarsgård all got votes as leads and supporting actors. Of these, only Skarsgård landed the nomination. This year, there was also category confusion in the writing races, as Roofman scored votes as both an adapted and an original screenplay.
- In terms of aligning with the Academy's taste, the Team Experience had ballots very similar to AMPAS' in the Best Production Design and Sound categories. In those cases, it was a 4/5 match.
- Father and son Stellan and Alexander Skarsgård are both nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Another such duo, the dearly departed Mohammad Bakri and his son Saleh Bakri, also received votes in the acting categories. In that case, both starred in the same film, All That’s Left of You.
- Though multiple actors had more than one eligible performance – the aforementioned Saleh Bakri, Everett Blunck, Amy Madigan, Josh O’Connor, A$AP Rocky, and Amanda Seyfried – they were mentioned for one of them on the ballots. This differs from Sebastian Stan’s situation last year, when he was splitting votes with himself for both A Different Man and The Apprentice.
- Some films are fated to be always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Marty Supreme was runner-up in four categories but was nominated only for Best Production Design. The Secret Agent and Sound of Falling were runners-up in three races, but, at least, they both received multiple nods elsewhere.
- Since we started sharing the team’s aggregated top ten, this is the first time that the majority of the nominees (6/10) are in a language other than English.
