NATHANIEL R in Cannes, Dheepan, Gyllenhaalic, Jacques Audiard, Live Blog, Oscars (15), Rooney Mara, The Assasin, Xavier Dolan, film festivals, foreign films

12:25 The jury arrives and out pours their little soundbytes. Anticipation. Who will win the Palme D'Or?

We're proud of our choices."
-Rossy de Palma

It was so congenial. One of the best experiences of my life. It was a great group."
-Joel Coen

Beautiful. Every time we deliberated we went very deep. We argued back and forth in a good way. The Coens made it very clear we should be very passionate. It was one of the best experiences "
-Guillermo del Toro

It feels like a little family. And the movies were so wonderful. It's odd artists judging artists but I guess it has to be done."
-Jake Gyllenhaal

The reporter reminds us that Xavier Dolan leaves WITH Marion Cotillard tomorrow to start filming his next movie. He never stops. No rest for the Francophones. All the Jury prizes and quick thoughts after the jump

The reporters counts only 8 films or so returning for the ceremony so either we have absent winners, multiple winners, or they have bad eyesight. Maiwenn (Mon Roi) is the last to arrive claiming she got ready in 10 minutes (so she must'a won something). She'll always be Diva LaPlavaguna to me.

Todd Haynes is in his seat with his legendary producer Christine Vachon (of Killer Films) so expect Carol to win something big. I see Vachon ALL THE TIME on the streets of NYC but I have never been all "I love your work" though I do. Too generic and broad a compliment for such an iconoclast producer

If you'd like to watch the ceremony live (in French) you can visit Canal+ but you have to reset your computer clocks to the correct time zone.

Agnes Varda gives tearful thanks. She's the subject of Anne Marie's "Women's Pictures" next month. Don't miss this chance to watch some of her classics!PRIZES

Palme D'or Short Film Waves' 98 (Lebanon/Qatar) Directed by Ely Dagher. This is an animated short about

Camera D'Or Cesar Augusto Acevedo (Colombia) for La Tierra Y La Sombra / Land and Shade

Honorary Palme D'Or Agnes Varda

Prix Du Scenario (Screenplay) Michel Franco for Chronic (USA). This film is about a home care nurse working with the terminally ill. Starring Tim Roth

Emmanuelle Bercot & Vincent Cassell star in MON ROI

Best Actress [TIE] Emmanuelle Bercot for Mon Roi (France) and Rooney Mara for Carol (USA). Combine this with the César outcome for Clouds of Sils Maria and ia clear messages is being sent to young actresses: work with the goddesses. What messages it sends to the goddesses themselves is another story and not one I'd like to think about! Rooney Mara is not present so Todd Haynes accepts on her behalf.

Jury Prize [Essentially Honorable Mention] The Lobster (Greece/USA) Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos

Best Actor Vincent Lindon for Measure of a Man (France)

Best Director Hou Hsiao-Hsien for The Assassin (Taiwan/China/Hong Kong). This one was a real threat for the Palme D'Or and I expect it to be a real threat for the Oscar nomination down the road too in Best Foreign Language Film. If so it'll be great to see Shu Qi & Chang Chen at the Oscars.

Grand Prize [Essentially Runner Up, give or take the Best Director Prize] Son of Saul (Hungary). Expect this one at the Oscars too. Not bad for a debut film from its director !

AudiardPalme D'Or Dheepan (France) Directed by Jacques Audiard which is about a Sri Lankan immigrant to France. Oh, I love Audiard. Very happy for him. He makes rich films.  He's previously won Cannes prizes for Screenplay (A Self-Made Hero) and the Grand Prize (Un Prophete) once again proving that Cannes loves their "momentum" for the big prize as much as the Oscars do for acting awards. Other Must-See films of Audiard's include: Read My Lips, Rust & Bone, and The Beat That My Heart Skipped.

And that's it for another whole year! Happy with the results? Shocked? Or already wondering about Carol's Oscar campaigning?
