Cannes Closing Prizes
12:25 The jury arrives and out pours their little soundbytes. Anticipation. Who will win the Palme D'Or?
We're proud of our choices."
-Rossy de PalmaIt was so congenial. One of the best experiences of my life. It was a great group."
-Joel CoenBeautiful. Every time we deliberated we went very deep. We argued back and forth in a good way. The Coens made it very clear we should be very passionate. It was one of the best experiences "
-Guillermo del ToroIt feels like a little family. And the movies were so wonderful. It's odd artists judging artists but I guess it has to be done."
-Jake Gyllenhaal
The reporter reminds us that Xavier Dolan leaves WITH Marion Cotillard tomorrow to start filming his next movie. He never stops. No rest for the Francophones. All the Jury prizes and quick thoughts after the jump
The reporters counts only 8 films or so returning for the ceremony so either we have absent winners, multiple winners, or they have bad eyesight. Maiwenn (Mon Roi) is the last to arrive claiming she got ready in 10 minutes (so she must'a won something). She'll always be Diva LaPlavaguna to me.
Todd Haynes is in his seat with his legendary producer Christine Vachon (of Killer Films) so expect Carol to win something big. I see Vachon ALL THE TIME on the streets of NYC but I have never been all "I love your work" though I do. Too generic and broad a compliment for such an iconoclast producer
If you'd like to watch the ceremony live (in French) you can visit Canal+ but you have to reset your computer clocks to the correct time zone.
PRIZES
Palme D'or Short Film Waves' 98 (Lebanon/Qatar) Directed by Ely Dagher. This is an animated short about
Camera D'Or Cesar Augusto Acevedo (Colombia) for La Tierra Y La Sombra / Land and Shade
Honorary Palme D'Or Agnes Varda
Prix Du Scenario (Screenplay) Michel Franco for Chronic (USA). This film is about a home care nurse working with the terminally ill. Starring Tim Roth
Best Actress [TIE] Emmanuelle Bercot for Mon Roi (France) and Rooney Mara for Carol (USA). Combine this with the César outcome for Clouds of Sils Maria and ia clear messages is being sent to young actresses: work with the goddesses. What messages it sends to the goddesses themselves is another story and not one I'd like to think about! Rooney Mara is not present so Todd Haynes accepts on her behalf.
Jury Prize [Essentially Honorable Mention] The Lobster (Greece/USA) Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos
Best Actor Vincent Lindon for Measure of a Man (France)
Best Director Hou Hsiao-Hsien for The Assassin (Taiwan/China/Hong Kong). This one was a real threat for the Palme D'Or and I expect it to be a real threat for the Oscar nomination down the road too in Best Foreign Language Film. If so it'll be great to see Shu Qi & Chang Chen at the Oscars.
Grand Prize [Essentially Runner Up, give or take the Best Director Prize] Son of Saul (Hungary). Expect this one at the Oscars too. Not bad for a debut film from its director !
Palme D'Or Dheepan (France) Directed by Jacques Audiard which is about a Sri Lankan immigrant to France. Oh, I love Audiard. Very happy for him. He makes rich films. He's previously won Cannes prizes for Screenplay (A Self-Made Hero) and the Grand Prize (Un Prophete) once again proving that Cannes loves their "momentum" for the big prize as much as the Oscars do for acting awards. Other Must-See films of Audiard's include: Read My Lips, Rust & Bone, and The Beat That My Heart Skipped.
And that's it for another whole year! Happy with the results? Shocked? Or already wondering about Carol's Oscar campaigning?

Rooney but not Cate! OMG!
Devastated for Cotillard. Mara will take her Cannes Best Actress win all the way to the supporting category during this award season.
Indeed,2nd nom for Mara coming up though i din't agree with the 1st nomination.
What's the diference of the jury prize, the grand prix and the palm d'our?
Is it like first place, second placar and third place?
Pedrinho, essentially, but the Jury Prize doesn't have to be given to a film.
Thanks!
Pedrinho -- yes PALME (#1) GRAND PRIX (runner up) JURY PRIZE (honorable mention) or thereabouts mixed in with Best Director which is also a huge get for an Auteur-focused festival.
Alright Rooney!!!!!! Jacques Audiard gets the Palme d'Or!!! YES!!!!
People loved Cotillard (great, great reviews) but she got snubbed one more time.
Cannes juries denying Cotillard Best Actress is not a snub. More the collective assumption since she's French and works in French cinema eventually some jury down the road will give her one.
Looks like Cate and Rooney are now a package deal for Oscars, no? First double Actress nominations since Thelma and Louise, or blatant category fraud from the Weinsteins?
Now that Ronney has won best actress some are suggesting that Cate go to supporting. I don't know if that is a wise move.
Marion has had a movie in contention for what, the last 4 years or so? She will eventually win the prize, or more likely be head of the jury one day.
As for Marion's Oscar chances, I heard that her part was actually scaled down for the film. Supporting actress maybe? Or still enough screen time for lead actress?
So happy for Audiard! I hope this gets more people to check out his work.
Isn't Rooney Mars really a co-lead in Carol?
Blanchett stays in the Streep position while Mara is headed for Julia Roberts ville.
Mark -- that's why i hear. which makes two lead actresses so someones doing category fraud! (that's oviously Mara not Blanchett since Blanchett is the title character)
Congrats Rooney, I think she is now easily the Best Supporting Actress front runner.
I doubt Cate will agree to campaign in Supporting.
lol at the prizes! at least comparing to what people were expecting to get awarded... don't care for mara as an actress but it's funny she shared the prize but no blanchett or cotilllard (always 'snubbed').
Mara but no Blanchett! Now that's a surprise.
I'm having fun imagining Cate Blanchett going all Jasmine French over the Mara win. But the truth is, the right thing has happened. Most of us have not seen the film, but it is safe to assume Blanchett gave the more expert performance in the movie and she is probably one the key motors behind the movie getting made to begin with. Mara was invited to the party and had very little to add to the conversation at Cannes about it; that is not to say she wasn't excellent. Word is she was phenomenal, What I'm saying is that getting award after award after award makes awards lose their meaning. The point of awards in such festivals is to motivate and promote. The Jury should not be interested in continuing to stroke the ego of a bonafide legendary actress. There is no collective gain in that. The goal should be to reward fresh talent and highlight it. And that seems to be what it has achieved.
I know everyone cares about the Oscars and it's a year long guessing game but I've reached a point where I only watch it for the speeches and what they tell us about Hollywood.
Mara & Stewart, anointed in France. Hm.
As I suspected, Cotillard may fall through the Leading/Supporting cracks, as Lady M is not in a lot of the play, and now reviews are saying the same thing about the film. Not really a surprise if it's true.
Happy for Vincent Lindon, an actor who seem to pop up on something every year at the French Film Festival, and is getting his day in the sun here.
Another year, another expected loss for my beloved Marion, naturally. Hoping for big things later this year with Macbeth though!
Bercot's speech was the WORST speech EVER! I don't know the women but she will be shame tomorrow1
It looks like Angela Bassett in The Assassin poster.
I wonder, would there have been category fraud back in 1991 if the film hadn't actually been called Thelma AND Louise? I think it was the title and relatively equal levels of fame and performance quality that made it happen. Well that and that the campaigning hadn't gotten awful yet... I can't imagine another at & L situation now with all things being equal. Mara will be supporting. After the Julia Roberts situation, I have no doubt. That one was just unforgivable.
With such a crowded lineup of potential best actress nominees it seems certain that Mara will be campaigned in supporting. Interesting comments about Cotillard's status, however. It's true that Lady Macbeth is technically a supporting role. She's just such a powerful force behind the scenes in the play that she seems like a lead.
I long for the day when all actors will do what Monique did and let the performance speak for itself. If Mara and Blanchett are co-leads, why can't they just be nominated in the same category? So frustrating!
