Cate to the Rescue!

Cate Blanchett may not have won Best Actress at Cannes but she still wins our hearts. And now we're left wondering what Oscar will do with two lesbian dramas with obvious co-leads hitting them at once this year (Freeheld & Carol), will they double down on Category Fraud or finally reject it? Anyway, here's Jose to give Cate the Coveted Post Cannes Ceremony Celebration Post. - Nathaniel R

Our adventure begins around May 15, 2015 when a certain red carpet superstar had to make an emergency call...

...and once again, Cate Blanchett arrived to save the day.

At the red carpet for the premiere of Carol she came out in a stunning creation by Giles. If this is a name you don't hear very often, it's because his works are usually reserved for the most adventurous dressers (he made the punk dress Sarah Jessica Parker wore to the Met Gala in 2013). This haunting piece was made using velvet, silk organza and silk ghazaar, and the print is said to have been inspired by a fax machine. It's a looked that made jaws drop and gives Cate the Best Dressed award at the festival though she had to let the Best Actress prize go to her co-star Rooney Mara.

Knowing that it would take us ages to recover from the beauty of her Giles gown, she toned it down for her other - too few - public appearances during the festival.

To the left we have her in skin toned romantic McQueen, in the center she once donned McQueen but went for a rocker-chick look (this happened before the Giles, so she was teasing us...) and to the right, she appears in a simple Armani Privé. Rumor has it she wore the dress to appease her dear friend Giorgio, who expected her to wear something from his brand for the Carol premiere. We all can agree even Giorgio must have loved what Cate went for, right?

BONUS: Best Accessory - Rooney Mara

Cate's Carol co-star circled around her at every event like our planet does to the sun. The Oscar nominee did not stray from her goth-chic path and exclusively wore black and white. However she adorably reprised her performance from the movie by never letting go of a half lustful/half admiring look whenever she saw Cate. This is what the movie is about in a nutshell, Rooney's performance is at its most tender whenever we see her falling in love with Cate's character, and if the marketing team for Carol knows anything about anything, they will start taking advantage of this right this very second.

Have any Cate in Cannes feelings to share as we say 'au revoir' to the festival?  What other actress would make a good accessory for the Blanchett?

My initial reaction is that I am happy for Rooney Mara. Cate already has two Oscars, and even Meryl Streep only won at Cannes once for best actress in A Cry in the Dark (so I presume it's hard to win). We need new young stars. Congrats Rooney!

LMAO!

I think it's obvious the jury shaded the hell out of Cate. I dunno if it's because they didn't like her performance or if they felt she's won enough awards. Regardless, she's at her career peak right now and she'll continue to thrive and make the haters more pressed with or without the Cannes award.

Seeing the genius Todd Haynes accept half of an award for Rooney Mara though was a fucking tragedy.

Mess.

Seeing the first post now makes me wish Cate and Diane would work together. The press tour to end all press tours in terms of fashion.

I remember reading an interview with Marion Cotillard in Vanity Fair I believe a few years ago (I believe in 2012, the year of Rust and Bone) and the journalist asked her a question along the lines of if she was surprised or disappointed she didn't win at Cannes and she said she wasn't surprised she didn't win because French people like an "underdog" and with her recent Oscar win and worldwide success Cotillard definitely isn't an underdog.

I think the same thing happened to Cate this year. But I agree with others that it's shady as hell they snubbed her over Rooney when in the past with (particularly) female-led films they usually share the award. The ladies from Volver and Beyond the Hills come to mind.

The obvious answer to " What other actress would make a good accessory for the Blanchett?" is obviously Swinton. But that press tour might just be too fabulous for us mere humans to withstand and our heads might explode.

So for our well being Cate should be benevolent to someone talented and beautiful but whose red carpet taste is pedestrian and devoid of risk. I nominate Jessica Chastain.

"Stand with me, Rooney, and you shall be rewarded."

am glad cate didn't win, critics tend to want everything great for certain people without giving others a chance. go sit down somewhere cate. you are not the only great actress to exist and if only underdogs are given the chance they did know how awesome others too are

Cate Blanchett is everything!!!

Rooney Mara is the most boring dresser on the red carpet though. It's like she never got over playing Lisbeth Salander.

Sad for Todd and Cate. A slap in the face that Bercot, with terrible reviews, was awarded with Mara and not her acclaimed costar, whose character is the point of the story.

Definite bias, akin to Cotillard.

Blanchett's become one of the all time great movie stars. Mara has the potential to become one as well. It's an exciting year for best actress. We already have Blanchett, Mara, Cotillard, and Ronan as "surefire nominations ". But so many others are on their way in the next seven months.

May 25, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJes06

Please, "a slap in the face"? Cate will survive. Geez.

In life you win some and then you lose some. I recall one interviewer asking Goddess Blanchett whether she was aware of the number of film awards she has chalked up and when the interviewer cited the number (can't remember the number though) she appeared astounded. My point is - given her talent and choice of movies, she will have many more opportunities in the future. Can't wait to see Carol and Truth.

I too "I demand more actressexual comics from now-on!

Jose: the comic is To Die For

Santy C: You are hilarious!!

The Cannes snub is very European though. The underdog always wins! The snub is also a blessing come awards and Oscar time. There is now more fire to the Great Cate performance in Carol than ever. And a kickstarter for Rooney Mara

So until now, 2015 has been good actress wise with Charlotte Rampling, Marion Cotillard, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara kicking ass. Also Charlize Theron was marvelous in Fury Road

I thought the glorious Cannes dress would not be featured here so yay.

The Actress award was clearly orchestrated by Xavier Dolan and his crying during Bercot's rambling speech and then taking selfies with her was so smug. And if your jury features a bunch of flops or bridesmaids like Sienna, Jake, Sophie and Guillermo, it's no wonder why they snubbed the actress from her generation with more awards mileage than they all combined x10.

May 25, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJows

Oh please, please, more comic strips like this! That was clever and fun.

May 25, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterErin

I thought her Armani Prive was just as incredible as the Giles, for me its on the same level as the Prive from the Cannes premiere of Blindness!

May 25, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterjohn

imagine a TSUNAMI-esque Blanchett in "Truth", earning raves in Toronto, followed by a gallant Blanchett completely changing her campaign and allowing Mara a Lead nod for "Carol" :P

May 25, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

This post is heaven

May 25, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersummer

Yavor: I know right!

But I dont think Blanchett cares at all about the Oscar. Its in the hands of Weinstein. And oh lord he cares!

So yes lets see if Blanchett is out of this world amazing in Truth. What happens then?

She was a scene stealer in Cinderella, according to Cannes reviews on par with her Blue Jasmine tour de force performance and hopefully brilliant in Truth

If Blanchett goes supporting for Carol and lead for Truth, are we looking at a double nom for the second time?

June 7, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterManuel

Truth is a bit of a wildcard. I wouldn't trust it. But if it and she is well received then a double nod would be great. Justice!
