DISQUALIFIED OR NOT SUBMITTED (ELIGIBILITY ISSUES ARE OFTEN VEXING) Modern movie scores tend to alternate between pre-existing materials and original commissioned music which lands some films in the disqualified zone. Never mind that the Academy rulings here tend to be inconsistent). You won't be seeing Clint Mansell (Black Swan), Carter Burwell (True Grit), John Adams (I Am Love), Alan Menken (Tangled) or Randy Newman (Toy Story 3) in the mix this year.

Sound Mixing

 INCEPTION  TRUE GRIT
SALT
SOCIAL NETWORK
THE KING'S SPEECH

Will Win INCEPTION. The Loudest and showiest often prevails.
Should Win
THE SOCIAL NETWORK which really leans hard on the mix of its effects, score, and always entirely intelligibel dialogue, even when you have to lean in like the bravura night club sequence.

The Challengers

THE SOCIAL NETWORK | SALT | 127 HOURS | TOY STORY 3

Long Shots
IRON MAN | UNSTOPPABLE | THE TOWN | HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON | ROBIN HOOD | THE FIGHTER |

Sound Editing

...
 INCEPTION TOY STORY 3
UNSTOPPABLE
TRUE GRIT
TRON LEGACY

WILL & SHOULD WIN Inception unless they'd *really* like to throw True Grit or Toy Story 3 an extra prize.

Original Song Predictions

 "I See the Light"
TANGLED
"If I Rise"
127 HOURS
"We Belong Together"
TOY STORY 3

"Coming Home"
COUNTRY STRONG
PROBABLE PROBABLE   PROBABLE    HMMM...

WON: "WE BELONG TOGETHER" clearly they wanted Toy Story 3 to have more than just the animated trophy.
SHOULD'VE WON
"I See the Light" Tangled.

Snubbed
It was clear after Bruce Springsteen's song for The Wrestler wasn't nominated that there is no such thing as a lock in the Original Song category. We were rooting hardest for BURLESQUE if merely to see Cher performing at the Oscars. She always livened up those ceremonies in the 80s when she showed up in her eye-popping gowns. But alas, the golden globe winning "you haven't seen the last of me" was not even nominated.

also snubbed
• "Sticks and Stones" from HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON • "Bound to You" from BURLESQUE • "Me and Tennessee" from COUNTRY STRONG • "Chanson Illusionist" from THE ILLUSIONIST • "Nothing" from WHY DID I GET MARRIED TOO
