READERS CHOICE - VOTE DAILY

How'd I do on my predictions?

4/5 Though I predicted Hamaguchi I had the wrong director (Spielberg) falling to his critical darling stature
Who was left out?
The big shocking snub was Denis Villeneuve who had picked up Globes, Critics Choice, and DGA nominations for helming the majestic space opera Dune. Perhaps they're waiting for Part Two to reward him? Other directors with smaller buzz but who were probably in their minds (given the other nominations) included Pedro Almodovar, Joel Coen, Guillermo del Toro, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Adam McKay.
Who Will Win?
This is Jane Campion's Oscar to lose.  It's hard to imagine any of the others amassing enough votes either because there are other places to award them (Original Screenplay) or because they dont have a long history with Hollywood or Cinephilia (Hamaguchi has a lot of new fans but this is essentially his rising master breakthrough year), or because they've been amply rewarded before for more popular films (Spielberg)
WHO SHOUL WIN? (Nathaniel's Choice)
Jane Campion forever. Here's what my ballot looks like

HOW'D THEY GET NOMINATED?
(a fun thought exercize)

44% He's Paul Thomas Anderson. Other directors greatly admire him and vice-versa as a longtime cinephile
24% Rapturous critical reception (as per usual) and lockstep precursor support
10% Nostalgia. Most voting members lived through the 1970s
7% Bradley Cooper insane scenes and Alana Haim's breakthrough appeal
6% How is he still Oscar-less? Let's fix that!
4% They've always liked films about California
3% Philip Seymour Hoffman tribute via casting
2% Can Maya Rudolph please host the Oscars?
26% Passion Project  Memoir. Voters respect / relate: everyone has a story to tell
26% Rapturous festival launch + early frontrunner status went a long way
16% "Sir Kenneth Branagh" respect
15% Chosen ensemble. Oscar's collective Dench Obsession and handing her that perfect ending + the glamour of Balfe & Dornan and harnessing that for...
11% ...the FYC campaign; Jamie sings!
3% He's still Oscarless?
2% Joy of going to the movies scene
1% We forgive you for Artemis Fowl etc...
30% Triumphant return. Oscar loves a comeback
25% Rapturous critical response + Venice kicking things off with the "Silver Lion" for Best Director
18% Committed FYC campaign. Netflix focusing on this film as their top priority early / relentlessly
15% She's Jane f***ing Campion. (They respected her even before the world demanded they honor more women)
11% A mountain of Best  Director citations from critics groups
8% Directors could definitely see what Peter and Phil saw gazing at the mountain.
4% The Piano nostalgia
54% NYFCC, LAFCA, and NSFC, the Holy Trinity of US critics groups, unanimous declared that Drive My Car was *the* film of the year. Worked like a megaphone
16% Oscar's increasingly international demographics
15% Pandemic Relatability / Main Character: A film about a director strugginlg with grief, his art, and connection.
10% Janus Films no budget campaign allowed voters to feel their own sense of discovery about it
5% Cannes launch prestige and Hamaguchi's international breakthrough year (see also Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy )
50% He's Steven Spielberg, the GOAT, and he finally made that musical he's dreamt of (Degree of Difficulty: High!)
18% West Side Story (Instant prestige + notalgia) is canon
17% And he pulled it off beautifully (Raves / Precursor support)
10% Discovery Power Reminder- What an (appropriate) cast of fresh stars. He's always had a great eye for new talent
5% Sympathy / Relatability for this branch. Why does the press keep dinging movies for not lighting the box office on fire when nothing does?

TRIVIA TRIVIA TRIVIA

• Star Sign: CANCER

• Birthplace: Studio City, California

• Partnered with comic genius Maya Rudolph in real life since 2001. They have four children.
