READER'S CHOICE POLL - VOTE DAILY

HOW'D I DO ON MY PREDICTIONS?
4/5 Missing Bardem. I thought a complete SAG Five transfer was too easy a call and thought DiCpario or Cage might surprise.
WHO WAS LEFT OUT?
Globe nominees Leonardo DiCaprio (Don't Look Up), Peter Dinklage (Cyrano), Mahershala Ali (Swan Song) for one. Though we're sadder to have lost the critical darlings Simon Rex (Red Rocket) and Nicolas Cage (Pig)
WHO WILL WIN?
This has been Will Smith's to lose for some time and the overall nomination tally of King Richard, hitting in all the right categories, suggests that he won't. But if there's an upset it'll be Benedict Cumberbatch as it would be a good time in his career to honor him and the performance is special.
WHO SHOULD WIN?
You can see my own ballot here

HOW'D THEY GET NOMINATED?
A thought experiment

30% Role. They love stars playing other stars
14% Nicole Kidman. His & Hers nominations
13% His competition was either in little seen films or non-Oscary roles
12% Performance.
11% Precursor support + Recency Bias
10% He's Javier Bardem. They've even honored him twice for subtitled work.
4% The novelty of his musical numbers
3% I Love Lucy nostalgia
2% Penélope Cruz. His & Hers nominations
1% The Good Boss
35% Performance. It's major and also benefits from against-type surprise
19% Role / Bait. Meaty and complex. Oscar loves men in 'love to hate him' roles. And straight actors playing gay.
15% Steady Campaign / Frontrunning Film.
11% Unfailing Precursor support + Critical raves
8% "Bronco Henry" memes
7% Kodi Smit-McPhee
4% Jane Campion's mystique rubs off
1% Doctor Strange
33% Performance / Super high energy, emotionally charged
20% Role: Oscar loves biopics about showbiz
18% Campaign. He's a charmer and works hard in promo efforts
10% Precursor support + Critical raves
8% Film. That editing nomination suggests it was close to a Best Picture nod
6% Spider-Man mania
3% Passionate movie-musical fanbase
2% Chemistry with Robin De Jesus
25% Role: Oscar loves biopics.
23% Performance: Entertaining. Heartfelt. Dimensional personality.
19% He's Will Smith. Superstar Overdue Narrative 'it's time'
13% Film. Best Picture heat goes a long way.
10% Precursor support. Unwavering.
8% Lively screen partners in Aunjanue Ellis and Jon Bernthal and Saniyaa Sidney hardly letting him coast through any scene
2% Venus & Serena fandom
54% He's Denzel Washington. He literally gets nominated every time he challenges himself outside of B genres like his many man with a gun action/crime films.
21% Performance/Role: Oscar is fickle about Shakespeare but it's meaty prestige stuff for actors
10% Precursor support
9% Recency bias. Fresh in their minds during voting.
5% Film / Director. Voters always pick the Coens from their overwhelming screening pile.
1% Kathryn Hunter
