NATHANIEL R in Bernadette Peters, Broadway and Stage, Carey Mulligan, Elisabeth Moss, Helen Mirren, JLo, Kelli O'Hara, Patty Clarkson, Red Carpet Lineup, Sutton Foster, Tony Awards, Triple Crown
Nathaniel R: HELLO Margaret and Jose. Ready for our fashion lineups? Margaret: Hello! Jose: Hello! Margaret: Harmonizing anyone? Jose: Actually I was changing into the gown from The King and I to get in the mood
Nathaniel: You guys. I am so discombobulated right now. Emmy ballots. Oscar trailers. Tony Results. my brain is like red carpet mush. Where should we start?
Margaret: Why not start with the adorably mismatched hosts? If someone had warned me we'd be seeing formal shorts on the red carpet I would have been thoroughly disapproving, and yet looking at Alan Cumming's cheeky little mug I can't help but enjoy it.
Three of the most entertaining stage performers ever. See them live the first chance you get.
Jose: Why must Alan Cumming insist on dressing like a von Trapp child? Does he not know how handsome he looks in a real suit?
Nathaniel: Aw but He's Fun. Capitals intended. I've never really thought of Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth as the same person but, as I stated in the live blog they seemed to be merging into one MECHA-ENTERTAINING-CUTIE they are both, shall we say, giddy about Entertaining The Masses.
Jose: You know somewhere Anne Hathaway was bitching at James Franco on the phone saying "would it have killed you to try this?"
Nathaniel R: Ha! Imagine how manic Hathaway would have become to try and keep up with Cheno & Cumming?!
Jose: Franco was the real life Norman Maines to her Vicki Lester. Sigh.
Margaret: Cheno's gown isn't breaking any molds but she looks smashing in it. Shining like the star she is, bless.
Nathaniel R I'm a little afraid to see what the pattern on Cumming's jacket is but from a distance its cute.
Jose Is Zac Posen the go-to designer for all Broadway people? I counted at least 5 ladies wearing his designs including Cheno
Nathaniel R plus wasnt he Bernadette's escort, too? or does he just like taking pictures with her?
Margaret This year's a special case. Anna Wintour set up a sort of mass styling event. Posen was the chief artist involved, I believe.
Jose Couture boot camp for theatre nerds
Nathaniel If so passing with flying colors was Sutton Foster with the deep red ombre-ish gown.
Lots of texture. simple lines but so elegant on her.
Jose I love that she let her hair down too, is she becoming her character from Younger?
Margaret the highlights and that skincare routine support the theory
Nathaniel Now is the time on Red Carpet LIneup where I say that if you aren't watching that show you are really missing out. I thought the premise seems disastrous but it's really fun and Sutton is perfect as is her predilection.
Jose We don't see enough Naeem Khan on the red carpet, so bless Sutton for this
Carey, Moss, Patty, The Queen
Margaret Especially when you compare it to the other deep red on a brunette in the lineup, she really comes up winning. Poor Carey Mulligan. Did her tailor start a job he couldn't finish? Because that looks like it's in the very early stages of becoming a dress
Jose This is what happens when amateurs try to pull off Balenciaga.
Nathaniel BALENCIAGAAAAAAAAAAA!
Margaret Obligatory.
Jose Solís Carey, as fine an actress as she is, can not wear couture well.
Nathaniel I think her face is too cherubic for couture. Couture demands hard jaded beauty.
Jose I thought of the eggplant emoji when I saw her, which pains me because I adored her in SKYLIGHT!
Nathaniel You guys I am so bored that Queen Mirren won another golden statue for being regal.
Not that Carey was ever going to win but it's just. again?
Jose As someone who thought that before seeing The Audience, she made me eat my words. She's beyond magnificent in that show. Not her Queen from "The Queen" at all, if that makes sense.
Nathaniel But even if she hadn't been she would have won is my point.
Margaret At least it's her first, and she's not an auto-collecting Tony vacuum. Though I understand the frustration.
Jose Perhaps, but a slacker she ain't, she could've worn something dull too and instead did this beautiful Badgley Mischka with the scene stealing nips!
Margaret She looks like a very elegant side table. That lace curtain!
Nathaniel side table hee. it's serving little tarts and tea.
Margaret Elisabeth Moss' gown makes me think of a nice vase blurred into a crisp slice of funfetti cake. I am enamored.
Nathaniel I am enamored of your similes moreso than the dress
Jose So basically all the dresses reminded you of tea time?
Margaret Maybe this is a sign that I need a snack...
Jose *sends Margaret a scone * I feel like Moss is never playful, so I loved this Oscar de la Renta
Nathaniel R you mean never playful outside of Peggy Olson because Peggy Olson roller skates around empty offices and rides motorbikes around soundstages. and smokes as she carriees her boxes into work.
Margaret I think runner up for most playful outfit, after Mr. Cumming and Ms Moss, might have to be Patricia Clarkson I can't deal with how delighted she looks about her matching clutch
Jose I love that she always looks like she's had a glass of champagne too much
Nathaniel The last time I saw her at an event she was promoting the Maze Runner and I think maybe she's relieved to be among adults again where she is an esteemed actress and not "that villain lady"
Margaret On a Tony red carpet one year someone asked her what she would title a musical based on her life and her answer was "PATTY!"
Nathaniel The theme song is going to be insanely catchy.
Jose Wouldn't she be perfect for a revival of "Applause"? I'm sure she can sing as well as Lauren could
Nathaniel While we're on the topic of delighted actors I feel that we need to acknowledged tiny Kelli O'Hara. I've never thought of her as a dancer and I definitely don't know after "the worm" or whatever she called it. But her heels were SO high last night that it was basically like walking around on toe shoes. But I kind of love the dress in a very calm non exciting but lovely (just like um Kelli O'Hara) kind of way
Jose I think the dress works fine for her, she's a classic, and Oscar de la Renta fit her well, she also matched beautifully with the background when she picked up her Tony Nathaniel: Blending into the background. You make this too easy for me, Jose
Jose: Don't make me...
[Editor's Note: Jose & Nathaniel have never seen eye to eye on Kelli O'Hara]
Margaret: Oooh, How about we discuss someone on whom we're less divided! (Bernadette?)
Nathaniel Before we do. Did you guys see that costume change video making the rounds today. O'Hara's King and I dresses have so many layers she must have a 10 inch waist to appear normal sized in them.
Jose: I saw her in her old fashioned undies and I'm confident that's what she wears IRL too
Nathaniel: okay okay. Moving on. Bernadette. Worship her always. Do not like this dress. It's not va va voom enough for her.
Jose Zac Posen again! But the fit is off, those creases are not flattering
Margaret Maybe it's the pose? I also think the green of the background + the red carpet are doing the dress the least possible favors
Jose Can we discuss how no one is studying how she has looked the same since "Pennies From Heavn" though? Eternal youth is not a myth it seems
Nathaniel: I think Bernadette's eternal youth springs from the vibrations of her mutant vocal chords. Isn't she supposed to have some freakish mutation there like the ability to produce two notes at once?
Eventual Oscar Winner (we can dream) Rose Byrne, Tony Winner Annaleigh Ashford, Globe Winner Ruth Wilson
Nathaniel: Before we wrap up. I need to know if both of you are fans of the one bold color look or not because we had a lot of examples of that last night. Rose Byrne's bright red. Annaleigh Ashford's emerald, Ruth Wilsons fuschia.
Jose I liked it with Wilson, because she usually makes terribly busy choices, so I approve of her minimalism here
Margaret They each chose a great color, which helps! I'm a big fan of Annaleigh's green gown, and a conditional supporter of Rose's red one, but I'm really not sold on Ruth's cap-sleeved formal wetsuit.
Jose I guess my favorite use of bold color overall was J.Lo *not * showing up in a "nude" outfit though. So I say, yes to color.
Nathaniel JLO'S uncharacteric gown made me giggle. It's so different than what she always wears that I could only imagine she was having slut-shaming conversations with herself about "THE THEATAH!" and trying to think what she could wear that would look "classy"
Margaret it's opaque! The entire gown is opaque!!! It's like a whole new person. Nathaniel: Psychotic break or one night experiment?
Jose You know she changed into something more J.Lo-ish for the after party! Gotta love that she respects the theatre though, I've seen one Uggs boot and Croc too many going to the theatre recently.
Nathaniel Finally... since the Tonys are the gayest awards show of them all (this is a compliment) who was most fuckable last night: Tony Yazbeck, Max von Essen, Corey Stoll, or...
Yazbeck, Von Essen, Stoll, Sadoski & Seyfried
Jose I say foursome and would also like to add Thomas Sadoski to the list. #greedy
Nathaniel: Poor Bradley Cooper. He loses again!
Margaret I'll go with Ken Watanabe. He can _wear_ a tux.
Nathaniel and can also yank a woman forcefully into an erotic dance-off by her corseted waist.
Margaret * fans self * An embarrassment of riches, the theater community is.
