NATHANIEL R in 1917, BAFTA, Joaquin Phoenix, Joker, Margot Robbie, Parasite

BAFTA came and went with the almost all of the Oscar frontrunners crowned. The only real surprise was Parasite taking Best Original Screenplay rather than a Tarantino victory though that shouldn't be a surprise given the Korean hits ingenious construction and terrific dialogue. After the jump the winners list in some speeches...

BEST FILM “1917”
Cementing its lead for the Oscar though we still hope that the preferential ballot helps Parasite surprise.

BEST DIRECTOR "1917"

LEADING ACTRESS RENÉE ZELLWEGER “Judy"

LEADING ACTOR JOAQUIN PHOENIX “Joker”
Phoenix called the British Academy out on their racism.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS LAURA DERN “Marriage Story”
We've been writing about awards season for 20 years now and it will literally never stop being weird to us that every organization wants the exact same 4 people to give speeches!

SUPPORTING ACTOR BRAD PITT “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”
Margot Robbie accepted the award for Brad, giving at least some variety to awards season -- Brad and Leo were both absent from the BAFTAs.

OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM “1917” Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris, Callum McDougall, Jayne-Ann Tenggren, Krysty Wilson-Cairns

This used to be a juried award and we really wish they'd go back to that.

OUTSTANDING DEBUT BY A BRITISH WRITER, DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER “BAIT” Mark Jenkin (Writer/Director), Kate Byers, Linn Waite (Producers)

FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE “PARASITE” Bong Joon Ho

DOCUMENTARY “FOR SAMA” Waad al-Kateab, Edward Watts

ANIMATED FILM “KLAUS” Sergio Pablos, Jinko Gotoh

Another victory for Klaus. This Animated Feature race is so crazy with I Lost My Body, Klaus, Toy Story 4, and Missing Link all having a victory here or there to give them hope that they might be called on Oscar night.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY “PARASITE” Han Jin Won, Bong Joon Ho

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY “JOJO RABBIT” Taika Waititi

ORIGINAL SCORE “JOKER” Hildur Guðnadóttir

CASTING “JOKER” Shayna Markowitz
This has got to be the weirdest of all awards to give this particular movie as it's practically a one person show.

CINEMATOGRAPHY “1917” Roger Deakins

EDITING “FORD V FERRARI (LE MANS ’66)” Andrew Buckland, Michael McCusker

PRODUCTION DESIGN “1917” Dennis Gassner, Lee Sandales

COSTUME DESIGN “LITTLE WOMEN” Jacqueline Durran

BRITISH SHORT ANIMATION “GRANDDAD WAS A ROMANTIC” Maryam Mohajer

BRITISH SHORT FILM “LEARNING TO SKATEBOARD IN A WARZONE (IF YOU’RE A GIRL)” Carol Dysinger, Elena Andreicheva

It's also up for the Oscar in the Documentary Shorts category... of the two short film categories at BAFTA it was the only one that also scored an Oscar nomination.

EE RISING STAR AWARD Micheal Ward

OUTSTANDING BRITISH CONTRIBUTION TO CINEMA Andy Serkis

And here is Rebel Wilson cracking up the attendees...
