NATHANIEL R in Last Night in Soho, moviegoing

by Nathaniel R

"Do you like scary movies?"
Glamorous mod movies?
Psycho thrillers?
Ghost stories?
Actress twinning movies (a la Persona, Mulholland Drive, Black Swan)?

I wish we could report that Last Night in Soho would satisfy all those disparate urges or even a single one of them. But alas...

I first saw the movie in Venice and though that was just under two months ago, this ghost story haunts as one of the worst of the year. Was I unduly harsh with a "D" from the Venice review? From the review...

...every time it gets interesting, it kills its own buzz by doing too much or not doing it well. There’s one more peak in which Anya Taylor Joy mesmerizes while singing “Downton” accapella for a club owner but it's downhill from there. Not just downhill but off the cliff.

ALSO OPENING

13 Minutes - a disaster movie about a tornado hitting a small town. Thora Birch, Anne Heche, Peter Facinelli and more star.
• Antlers, a wendigo-related horror film from Scott Cooper (Black Mass, Crazy Heart). Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons star.
A Mouthful of Air - Indie drama with Amanda Seyfried and Finn Wittrock.
• My Hero Academia: World Heroes -anime sequel
• The Souvenir Part II - Joanna Hogg's sequel to her critical darling starring Honour Swinton Byrne.

EXPANDING

The French Dispatch, adding 600+ theaters after a successful limited release last weekend. [REVIEW]

WHERE IS IT?

Mass ??? We heard that the sensationally acted indie drama (Oscar-buzzing for Ann Dowd) was adding theaters. But that plan must have changed. The nearest place it's playing to us here in New York City is... Connecticut. Is it playing near you? Or do you have to leave your state? [REVIEW]

NEW TO STREAMING THIS WEEKEND

Army of Thieves (Netflix) Hunky actor/director Matthias Schweighöfer in a prequel to Army of the Dead
Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (Paramount+) weird that Paramount ditched theatrical on this always profitable franchise. How are the big studios going to continue shelling out for all their content once they lose the hundreds of millions they gain from theatrical? The least profitable film from this series (Ghost Dimension, 2015) still made almost 8 times its budget during its theatrical run. But that was so much weaker than its predecessors (and so long ago) how can this really be an incentive for people to sign up for this service?
The Spine of Night (Shudder) a violent animated fantasy
