The ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER cast cheers on their auteur winning Best Film

Greetings from blizzard-hit NYC. Over the pond the BAFTA awards were held this weekend. Do they change the Oscar race? Who can say but they do take place right before the Academy votes for their own winners:  February 26 through March 5. During this key voting window we'll also experiene the winners of the newly rechristened "Actor Awards" (SAG ceremony is on March 1). If that weren't enough we'll also see the remainder of the Film Bitch Nominations and Oscar volleys right here which are sure to sway thousands of okay tens of vo --- absolutely no one but they're still fun for us to share!

One Battle After Another took home six BAFTAs with Frankenstein and Sinners tied for runner up with three each.  After the jump all of the winners and some acceptance speeches, too...

Film

Hamnet
Marty Supreme
One Battle After Another
Sentimental Value
Sinners

It remains the frontrunner for most Best Film prizes this year and we especially loved this moment in Paul Thomas Anderson's speech when he paid tribute to the other nominated films...

This is a tremendous honour. I'm well aware of the other films that share this gift of an award. Anybody that says movies aren't any good anymore can piss right off because this is a great fucking year.

British Film

28 Years Later
The Ballad of Wallis Island
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy
Die My Love
H Is For Hawk
⭐ Hamnet
I Swear
Mr. Burton
Pillion
Steve

Hamnet gets some hometown love. We love to see it.

Film Not in the English Language

It Was Just An Accident
The Secret Agent
⭐ Sentimental Value
Sirat
The Voice of Hind Rajab

The Secret Agent has been winning these prizes so it was nice to see a change of pace since we're all about spreading the wealth (in most categories) -- why else should we have so very many awards shows?

Leading Actress

 Jessie Buckley, Hamnet
Rose Byrne, If I Had Legs I'd Kick You
Kate Hudson, Song Sung Blue
Chase Infiniti, One Battle After Another
Renate Reinsve, Sentimental Value
Emma Stone, Bugonia

Buckley still on track to sweep the televised prizes.

Leading Actor

⭐ Robert Aramayo, I Swear
Timothée Chalamet, Marty Supreme
Leonardo DiCaprio, One Battle After Another
Ethan Hawke, Blue Moon
Michael B. Jordan, Sinners
Jesse Plemmons, Bugonia

A nice surprise for BAFTA voters to embrace a film that isn't eligible at the Oscars. Sony Pictures Classics will eventually release I Swear in US theaters.

Supporting Actress

Odessa A'Zion, Marty Supreme
Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Sentimental Value
⭐ Wunmi Mosaku, Sinners
Carey Mulligan, The Ballad of Wallis Island
Teyana Taylor, One Battle After Another
Emily Watson, Hamnet

CHAOS IN BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS. Which is the way we like it in all categories though we're lucky to get even one category like that each season: Teyana Taylor won the Globe, Amy Madigan won the Critics Choice, and now Wunmi takes BAFTA. It may all come down to SAG or maybe it will stay suspenseful through Oscar night?

Supporting Actor

Benicio Del Toro, One Battle After Another
Jacob Elordi, Frankenstein
Paul Mescal, Hamnet
Peter Mullan, I Swear
⭐ Sean Penn, One Battle After Another
Stellan Skarsgård, Sentimental Value

Another category that feels like it has a frontrunner (Skarsgard) ...but maybe doesnt? Elordi won the Critics Choice, Skarsgard won the Globe, and now Penn takes BAFTA. Skarsgard isn't nominated for SAG so this will remain suspensful on Oscar night and we're super happy about that!

Director

Yorgos Lanthimos, Bugonia
Chloé Zhao, Hamnet
Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme
⭐ Paul Thomas Anderson, One Battle After Another
Joachim Trier, Sentimental Value
Ryan Coogler, Sinners

P.T. Anderson will finally take home an Oscar (or two) and it's been such a long time coming so we couldn't be happier about it.

Original Screenplay

I Swear
Marty Supreme
The Secret Agent
Sentimental Value
 Sinners

I like Sinners but I'll admit I was hoping for an upset here under the 'share the wealth' umbrella since it keeps winning this category.

Adapted Screenplay

The Ballad of Wallis Island
Bugonia
Hamnet
⭐ One Battle After Another
Pillion

Another prize that has felt pre-ordained for months now.

Debut by British, Writer, Director or Producer

The Ceremony
⭐ My Father's Shadow
Pillion
A Want In Her
Wasteman

While the UK Oscar submission was surprise 'snub' for Oscar's finals for Best Internatioanl Feature Film it's nice that it took home a BAFTA (though we were rooting for Pillion)

Documentary

2000 Meters to Andriivka
Apocalypse in the Tropics

Cover-Up
⭐ Mr. Nobody Against Putin
The Perfect Neighbor

Denmark just keeps winning. They're up for Best International Feature Film frequently at the Oscars and now they're taking the Best Documentary prize at BAFTA. Will the Oscar follow suit? The lineup is different so who knows.

Animated Film

Elio
Little Amélie
 Zootopia 2

With KPop Demon Hunter out of the running at BAFTA, Zootopia 2 gets a shot at a major film prize and takes it. It isn't as strong as Little Amelie but what can you do? Subtitled animated features rarely get the wins at English language awards ceremonies.

Childrens & Family Film

Arco
 Boong
Lilo & Stitch
Zootopia 2

Boong is an Indian film is about a schoolboy nagivating racial tensions and trying to reunite his divided family. It has no US distribution yet.

Casting

⭐ I Swear
Marty Supreme
One Battle After Another
Sentimental Value
Sinners

Nice to see this prize go to a British film. BAFTA can be weird about honoring their own if Oscar players are involved.

Cinematography

Frankenstein
Marty Supreme
⭐ One Battle After Another
Sinners
Train Dreams

Sinners and Train Dreams have gotten the most awards or critical attention in this category so this is something of a (small) surprise.

Editing

F1
A House of Dynamite
Marty Supreme
⭐ One Battle After Another
Sinners

One Prize After Another.

Costume Design

 Frankenstein
Hamnet
Marty Supreme
Sinners
Wicked: For Good

We would love to see an awards group that doesn't feel the need to reward Frankenstein here since its competition -- particularly Sinners and Marty Supreme have such amazing costume work.

Makeup & Hair

 Frankenstein
Hamnet
Marty Supreme
Sinners
Wicked: For Good

Frankenstein is likely to prevail at the Oscars again in a weak year for the category (which is, really, the fault of Oscar voters, not the films themselves.)

Original Score

Bugonia
Frankestein
Hamnet
One Battle After Another
⭐ Sinners

Sinners continues its dominance in music film prizes.

Production Design

⭐ Frankenstein
Hamnet
Marty Supreme
One Battle After Another
Sinners

I'm really not a fan of this win. Why can't Jack Fisk (Marty Supreme) ever win anything given his frankly astonishing production design gifts and very long career? Sinners would have also made an amazing winner.

Sound

⭐ F1
Frankenstein
One Battle After Another
Sinners
Warfare

Car-racing dramas always get the sound love.

Visual Effects

⭐ Avatar: Fire and Ash
F1
Frankenstein
How to Train Your Dragon
The Lost Bus

British Animated Short

Cardboard
Solstice
⭐ Two Black Boys in Paradise

British Short

Magid/Zafar
Nostalgie
Terence
⭐ This Is Endometriosis
Welcome Home Freckles

EE Rising Star Award

⭐ Robert Aramayo
Miles Caton
Chase Infiniti
Archie Madekwe
Posy Sterling

Robert Aramayo proved a double winner at the BAFTAs, also taking Best Actor away from the Oscar darlings in their parallel category.

Did you watch the BAFTAs this year? What do you think of their choices for the wins?
