NATHANIEL R in Annie Awards, Bob's Burgers, Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life as a Courgette, Oscars (16), The Red Turtle, Your Name, Zootopia, animated films, precursor awards, short films

Nominations for the 44th annual Annie Awards have been announced. Zootopia leads with 11 nominations with Laika's Kubo and the Two Strings just behind with 10 nominations. Because the Annies have two separate feature categories (the regular one plus an "indie" category which basically means "foreign") you can probably safely assume that the eventual Oscar lineup will be some mishmash between the two.

nominees and more after the jump...

Kubo takes aim with 10 nominations, the most ever for a Laika feature

In fact the Best Director category is just that, highlighting these five pictures between the two feature lists (links go to reviews):

Are Zucchini and Your Name stronger competitors for the Oscar nomination than we have assumed? They'll have to get around Moana, which could be quite a chore, if they both hope to place. Moana probably didn't score a nomination for Director simply because there were so many cooks in that particular kitchen.

Of note: Films left out of the top categories but a nomination here or there include hits The Secret Life of Pets and Trolls, the racy comedy Sausage Party, and the Netflix rescued feature The Little Prince.

PRODUCTION CATEGORIES

Best Animated Feature

Both of the previous Kung Fu Panda films have been up for Oscars. Will Oscar go for number 3 despite a distinct lack of buzz?

Best Animated Feature - Independent

The Red Turtle will surely swing an Oscar nomination but can any of these others, and if so which ones?

Best Animated Special Production

Pear Cider is eligible for animated short at the Oscars.

Best Animated Short Subject

Three of these titles (Blind Vaysha, Pearl, and Piper) are also in the running for an Oscar Animated Short nomination. Pearl also snagged nominations in additional categories so it's definitely one to watch for a nomination with Oscar.
