NATHANIEL R in Channing Tatum, DVD, How To Train Your Dragon, Isnt It Romantic?, Jesus' Son, Moonlight, Samantha Morton, Smallfoot, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Upside, animated films, streaming

The heads up on what's newly available right now to screen at home.

New on DVD/Blu-Ray
How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World - do we think this has a shot at the Oscar or was the conversation too muted? The series hasn't yet won the gold.
Isn't It Romantic  If you can't get enough Rebel Wilson in movie theaters with The Hustle, you can try her romantic comedy from earlier in the year. We haven't actually caught this yet. If you have do let us know what you thought in the comments as we're curious about it.
The Upside Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart led this unexpected hit based on the French blockbuster The Intouchables.

New to streaming titles and iTunes deals on the ultra cheap are after the jump...

Notable iTunes 99¢ Rentals

The Killing of a Sacred Deer - Yorgos Lanthimos does it again... but define "it". I go back and forth on this picture but I'm just glad I was witness to Nicole Kidman doing kinky anesthetia roleplay with Colin Farrell. I once threatened to write 1000 words on Kidman's performance in this and didn't. Missed the window but damn, she's fascinating in it.
20th Century Women - Easily wins the title of single most underappreciated perfect thing in recent years
Doctor Zhivago - If you adjust for inflation it's still in the top 10 movies of all time. Of those 10 it's by far the least discussed, though
Year of the Dog  - Remember this promising Molly Shannon performance which she's totally made good on since? The supporting cast is so fun, too: Regina King + Laura Dern!

New on Various Streaming Platforms
As we do with our monthly what's streaming survey we always play 'streaming roulette' here -i.e. whatever image you're seeing is exactly what came up when we randomly scrolled to pick one.

You try'na get smart with me, huh Chiron?

Moonlight (2016) on Netflix
What a movie. It remains a miracle that this won the Oscar so don't ever let anyone tell you that the preferential ballot for Best Picture is a flop. Also, it's so wonderful (and was not a done deal given both Hollywood fickleness and intangible elements of luck/fate with showbiz careers) that both of these young actors have real careers now. So good on Jharrel Jerome and Ashton Sanders for working their mutual breakthrough.

-How was Mexico?
-Hot.

Jesus' Son (2000) on Prime and Hulu
This won two acting medals at the very first Film Bitch Awards (!) for Samantha Morton and Billy Crudup. It's underdiscussed today (and we don't remember it well) but we sure did love it at the time... time to revisit now that it's so easy to see for the time being. In related news: Samantha Morton may be the most underappreciated of all contemporary actors that you could reasonably call a genius without being hyperbolic. She's been brilliant so very very many times.

Smallfoot (2018) on HBOGo
What was with animation studios and their bigfoot/sasquatch fetish this past couple of years? (See also: Missing Link and The Son of Bigfoot). Raise your hand if you'd like Channing Tatum to start actually starring in movies again.
