Best Original Score

DUNE Industrial menace, alien shimmer, and those trademark deep Zimmer vibrations. |
THE FRENCH DISPATCH
Desplat does it again, the full orchestra, like another set of quirky unforgettable characters offscreen. Jean-Yves Thibaudet on piano. |
THE GREEN KNIGHT
Earthy and alien simultaneously. Expertly deployed echoes, choral exclamations, and wood-wind instruments |
POWER OF THE DOG
The cello plays a banjo in this instantly iconic insinuating score. |
ZOLA A playful avante-garde but never twee soundscape, full of chirps, trills, and trap-infused music box melody. |
Runners Up | ||||
Finalists: Carter Burwell for The Tragedy of Macbeth, Dickon Hinchliffe for The Lost Daughter, Bryce and Aaron Dressner Cmon Cmon , Semi Finalists: Albert Iglesias for Parallel Mothers, Henry Gregson-Williams for The Last Duel, Anne Dudley for Benedetta, Eiko Ishibashi for Drive My Car |
Best Original Song
Tunes! |
||||
"So May We Start" Leos Carax's arch romantic tragedy whatsit has almost no where to go but down after this dazzling "start" even though it sets the tone superbly.
|
"U" An involving driving cacophonous banger to open the movie. Like "So May We Start" it's so strong how do you chase it? |
"Surface Pressure" The best "character" song in a delightful tapestry of them. Wonderful interpretation by Jessica Darrow. [INTERVIEW]
|
"We Don't Talk About Bruno" Clever wordplay, baton-passing fun, and comic paranoia in this plot/character song. Plus that singalong appeal on "Bruno---no no no". No wonder it's a huge hit.
|
"No Time To Die" A dirge but not an inexpressive one. Bond songs get lots of attention, sometimes for good reason. |
Runners Up | ||||
Finalists: "A Million Miles" with its 'lalalala' choral responses provides Belle with a beautiful reverent climax (of sorts), "Jim Crowe Count" is a miniscule banger in The Harder They Fall , introducing Stagecoach Mary and making you wish the whole film were the musical it actually wants to be, "Just Look Up" is a camp power ballad highlight within Don't Look Up ... deliciously dumb while also sounding like an actual hit power ballad. Semi Finalists: "Keep the Beat" Vivo, "Dos Oruguitas" Encanto, "This Was Me" Everybody's Talking About Jamie |
Best Sound
Considering the whole soundscape: Mixing, Editing, Effects, and Overall Design. |
||||
DUNE
Inventive, alien and foreboding world-building. "Use the voice!" |
THE GREEN KNIGHT
Eery quiet, moody scoring, and medieval fantasy |
IN THE HEIGHTS
Movie musical heaven - high energy and clarity. |
THE POWER OF THE DOG
The comb. The piano & banjo wars. That score. A sublime mix. |
WEST SIDE STORY Movie musical heaven - gorgeous vocals! |
Finalists: The ragged flopsweat of last-chance music-making in tick, tick...BOOM!, an intriguing soundscape of whimsical scoring, twitter chirping, loud diegetic songs, and character quirk in Zola |
Best Adapted Score, Combination Score, or Song Score
