Screamingly funny with her merciless deadpan "talking club" tyranny. Every cutaway was bliss.   If she hadn't already "arrived" this scene would have done it. So perfectly stylized and magnetic she steals the whole movei.
The greatest mystery of the movies: why hasn't PTA written her a leading role? Hilarious, predatory, eccentric, and absolutely singular. Is it our imagination or is this the second best performance in the film (after Kathyrn Hunter's weird sisters)? She brings the drama and tragedy. Adored her baffled NPC (thrown by a "capuccino request)  and the slow-drip of sentience expanding her  horizons.

Finalists: Golda Rosheuvel has the bit part of "Shadeout Mapes" in Dune but that strange vocalization when she realizses a prophesy has come true lingeredd, Mary Steenburgen 's familar earnestness pays off with a twist as "Mrs Kimball" in Nightmare Alley

Semi-Finalists: Audra McDonald as "Barbara" in RespectErin Kellyman as "Winifred" in The Green Knight,  Phyllis Smith as "Delores" in Barb & Star go to Vista Del Mar, Ts Madison as "Hollywood" in Zola, Sophie Hall as "Baybe" in Zola, Ariana Grande as "Riley Bina" in Don't Look Up (would have included Charlotte Rampling from Dune but she had one too many scenes - it's not a perfect science!)

Wonderful as the father of a strangely devout girl, especially in the scenes where he knows he's being fleeced but caves to formidable Charlotte Rampling    A bolt of addled entitled name-dropping womanizing star energy. Robbed of an Oscar nomination sadly.   His opportunistic thief is all kinds of unnerving "Tweren't enough" he says menacingly to his victim. But this performance is in just the right dose.   On fire in his legal battle / pseudo dick measuring contest with Rosamund Pike. The movie peaks right there.  He's always had a gift with broad comedy and he's perfectly cast here as a too cool adventurer who is also a loser living in his mom's house.

Finalists: Keith Carradine as "Governor Edward" in Power of the Dog, Sean Penn as "Jack Holden" in Licorice Pizza, Jefferson Mays as "The Doctor" in Tragedy of Macbeth

Semi Finalists: Babs Olusanmokun as "Jamis" in Dune, Paul Anderson as "The Geek" in Nightmare Alley, Tom Waits as "Rex Blau" in Licorice Pizza, and Joseph Cross as "Matthew" in Licorice Pizza (would have included Nate Mann and Skyler Gisondo from Licorice Pizza or David Dastmalchian and Chang Chen from Dune but they had too many scenes)

MITCHELLS VS THE MACHINES
This is how you do protagonist voice work in an animated film. Nothing flat about this. She gifts Mirabel with so much personality and range of feeling. There is, apparently, nothing that this great actress can't do, including be hilarious as an evil vengeful AI.  Animated films lost magic when it became mandatory to cast only celebrities (who dont always have interesting voices) but Mitchells knows better. So much vocal range and he commits to every bit.

Finalists: John Leguizamo as "Bruno" in Encanto, Riley Keough as "Emily" in The Guilty

Semi Finalists: Jack Dylan Grazer and Jacob Tremblay as "Alberto" and "Luca" in Luca. Awkwafina in Raya and the Last Dragon, Abbi Jacobsen Mitchells vs the Machines

KING RICHARD
Like Anthony Ramos (terrific in the leading role) he makes every line feel spontaneous. Energy, comic timing, and dramatic arc, too.   A true natural, and best in show in this thriller despite a cast full of  seasoned actors.  Unerringly natural in a complicated role as a wise but exhausting kid.  Perfect American accent too!  A perfect mixture of loneliness, giggles, curiousity, and spontaneous feeling. Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis play beautifully off each other but Sidney, already a pro, plays at their level, too. Wonderful.

Finalists: Reyn Doi  as "Yoyo" in Barb & Star, Gabrielle Sanz as "Marion" in Petite Maman

Semi Finalists: Lia McHugh as "Sprite" in Eternals, Sydney Kowalske as "Jessie LeBlanc" in Blue Bayou, Skye Dakota Turner as "Young Aretha" in Respect, Demi Singleton as "Serena Williams" in King Richard, and Jack Nielen as "William" in Spencer (NOTE: Millicent Simmons A Quiet Place Part 2 and Cooper Hoffman Licorice Pizza are both 18 so they didn't quite qualify for this category.)

Breakthrough Performer

This is not strictly an *acting* award. The basic criteria is being a) early in movie career and b) making us
immediately want to see them in something else soon! (Note: Actors are not eligible for this category if they are nominated in one of the four traditional acting categories)

Though his co-stars got the bulk of the acclaim, he's also excellent as violent proud Bernardo in this remake. We're eager to see where this Tony winner goes from here now that he's proved onscreen bonafides  This singer turned heads with her acting debut and nabbed an Oscar nomination last season (Yes, this was a 2021 release. We go by calendar year, here)   She's been showered with awards for daring to dance in Rita Moreno's footprints. A triple threat so here's hoping she finds other roles that use all her gifts.
Paul Thomas Anderson's movies has always been an excellent director of actors and she repays his confidence: funny, strangely compelling and just so real while also hitting the character arc   We already loved him from Kim's Convenience but he rises to the challenge of carrying a whole feature with great physicality and comic timing.
