He missed that plane... and stayed! Midnight smartly reconfigures itself as a study of longterm relationships - to repeat the ephemeral nature of the other films would have been fatal | Fusing the Bernie Madoff scandal w/ Streetcar (should this be adapted?) proves quite fascinating and inspired. Great dialogue, interesting form and springboard for great acting |
Screenplay as tough love ode to the abrupt end of youth and a dazzling specific character study too. I would gladly watch a sequel to reconnect with Frances. |
He's been inching towards one man writer/director show and gets there with this a clever treatise on our modern dependencies and love as projection, illustion and reality | Beautifully dry humor and character through-lines. Here's an appropriate to the material piece of trivia ... this is the first (produced) screenplay from a 57 year old writer |
Finalists: Sarah Polley for Stories We Tell, Nicole Holofcener for Enough Said Semi-Finalists: Chad Hartigan for This is Martin Bonner, Sebastian Lelio & Gonzalo Mazra for Gloria, Eric Singer and David O. Russell for American Hustle, and Jane Adams and Joe Swanberg for All the Light in the Sky |

THE SPECTACULAR NOW |
Soulfully pulled from the memoirs by Solomon Northup as told to David Wilson | This talkative erotic French drama is based on a graphic novel by Julie Maroh | It's so fully cinematic (albeit with the look of old vhs) that it's shocking to learn it's based on a play by Antonio Skarmeta. | Expanded from Cretton's short film of the same name (Keith Stanfield is in both as Mark and Marcus!) | This team, who previous created the wonderful (500) Days of Summer delicately transfer the YA novel by Tim Tharp |
Finalists: Steve Coogan & Jeff Pope for Philomena Semi-Finalists: Sofia Coppola for The Bling Ring, Billy Ray for Captain Phillips, Nancy Doyne & Carrol Cartwright for What Maisie Knew, Daniel Pennac for Ernest and Celestine |

Guaranteed to make you miss hand drawn animation, this imaginative, sweet and oddly funny story about unexpected friendships and living your own true life is an absolute charmer | Disney returns to the Princess Musical with double the princesses, a touching instantly affecting song score, and actually rousing adventure for the boys. Formulaic, sure, but it also transcends | Miyazaki's singular biopic of an aeronautical engineer who creates for beauty knowing his work is for destruction has a fascinating way with mixing terror into otherwise gorgeous images |
Finalists: none Semi-Finalist: A Letter to Momo and The Croods |
