BLACKkKLANSMAN BLACK PANTHER COLD WAR MARY POPPINS RETURNS
A STAR IS BORN
Terence Blanchard, and 70s soul hits Ludwig Göransson, Kendrick Lamarr, and more...
Traditional folk music arranged in multiple styles + standards
 Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman

Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, and a bevy of songwriters. Plus that great Edith Piaf number
Runners Up

Finalists: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and The Favourite
Semi Finalists: How to Talk to Girls at Parties, Vox Lux, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, and Bohemian Rhapsody

Best Sound Mixing
Think overall soundscape. They record while filming and later blend multiple sources (dialogue, effects, music, etcetera) for finished sound design
COLD WAR FIRST MAN ROMA A STAR IS BORN YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE
Shifting music styles and lives sublimated in music are crucial to its pasage of times. Precision with soul.
Technical virtuosity but also intimate mixing choices and that incredible score, woven into Armstrong's interiority.
The year's most immersive soundscape. You are there in Mexico, 1970.
Thrilling live concert scenes. A music drama that rocks and bops and weeps.
Haunting slivers of pain, that standout score, and headspace soundwork. Plus Charlene
Runners Up

Finalists: Annihilation, Black Panther, Hereditary, Mary Poppins Returns
Semi Finalists: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, A Quiet Place, Zama

Best Sound Effects Editing
Think disparate elements. They create, assemble, record sound and effects.
ANNIHILATION FIRST MAN HEREDITARY A QUIET PLACE INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE
The quiet. The Shimmer. The weapons. That parroting monster *shudder*
So much technical bravado in this movie. In a just doing our jobs sort of way.  The mounting paranoia of sounds. That off-screen head roll that will haunt us forever.
The sound editing is crucial to its success; if ony there had been no score! So much web-slinging action and comedy. Totally the year's best superhero picture!
Runners Up

Finalists: Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Incredibles 2
Semi Finalists: Solo: A Star Wars Story, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, You Were Never Really Here, Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Best Original Song
Tunes!
HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES
"Eat Me Alive"
MARY POPPINS RETURNS
"The Place Where Lost Things Go"
A STAR IS BORN
"I'll Never Love Again"

A STAR IS BORN
"Maybe It's Time"

A STAR IS BORN
"Shallow"
This spoken word piece that ascends into punk scream-singing is the film's rowdy highlight.
The new musical's loveliest tune, and a peak inside Mary's own melancholy.   It gets the "My Man" placement, and fulfills the tragic power ballad defiant love song musical legacy.

Jackson Maine's signature tune gets multiple airings. It's also a sly storytelling device about how stuck this rock star is.
You have to believe that this song will birth a star when you hear it as demo. You do. An absolute sensation when its finished
Runners Up

Finalists: Mary Poppins Returns's "A Cover is Not the Book" is a standout entertainment, A Star is Born "Always Remember Us This Way,"... arguably the best A Star is Born song but not as precise in the way it connects to the overall story as the three nominated above,  Mary Poppins Returns's finale "Nowhere to Go But Up" ends the movie on a refreshingly optimistic high note.

Semi Finalists: Black Panther "All the Stars", The Ballad of Buster Scruggs "When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings," A Star is Born "Look What I Found," Suspiria "Suspirium," A Wrinkle in Time "Flower of the Universe"
