READER'S CHOICE POLL

picture polls
HOW'D I DO ON MY PREDICTIONS?
4/5 Correctly predicted Penelope Cruz but assumed Lady Gaga would still be here, so I missed Kristen Stewart
WHO WAS LEFT OUT?
Lady Gaga (House of Gucci), who was the only actress to score at EVERY televised precursor was the big snub. Other lauded performers that didn't make the list included SAG nominee Jennifer Hudson (Respect), BAFTA nominees Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza) and Tessa Thompson (Passing), and Golden Globe winner Rachel Zegler (West Side Story)
WHO WILL WIN?
When the nominations were announced we leaned  Olivia Colman or Kristen Stewart but as the season progressed we shifted to Jessica Chastain. And she did indeed prevail.
WHO SHOULD WIN?
My heart is with Chastain or Colman this time around though a Cruz or Kidman win would also be delightful as they were amazing, too. Here's my personal ballot.

HOW'D THEY GET NOMINATED?
a thought experiment

32% Performance. She nails the performativity and naivete. It could have gone wrong but she completely committed. "Jesus keeps taking her higher and higher!"
33% Role. Biopic
12% Campaign. She worked hard for this nomination tirelessly promoting the film
11% Lockstep precursor support
7% Makeup team. Oscar loves seeing a complete transformation.
5% Overdue factor. They owed her.
50% Performance. Despite her ubiquity she's freshly fascinating.
20% Maggie Gyllenhaal / Narrative / Film. The year's critical darling all-female triumph: source, adaptation, direction, performance.
10% She's Olivia Colman.
8% Role / Source. Respect book. Complex character.
6% Precursor love
4% Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson, Dagmara Dominczyk
2% The Father afterglow plus Mitchells vs the Machines & Landscapers.
40% Performance.
26% Film / Narrative. The legend of her partnership with Almodóvar keeps growing and they couldn't honor this in International
12% Role. Moving /
10% Timing / Last minute celebrity campaigning on her behalf
6% Three very prestigious prizes: Venice Volpi Cup + LAFCA and NSFC wins
5% Scattered competition. Gaga and Hudson weren't as respected as actors. Haim and Zegler were unfamiliar to voters
1% Javier Bardem.
37% Role. Oscar loves nothing as much as they love celebrities playing other celebrities.
20% Performance / Film. Bad early press about the film / her casting led to under-estimation / surprise contender factor
15% She's Nicole Kidman / Overdue. 4 noms only for this career?
10% I Love Lucy nostalgia
8% Precursor support
6% Showbiz movie. They eat those up.
