BUTTERFLY France A man swimming in the ocean relives water-based memories from his life |
FOREVER GREEN US An evergreen tree raises an orphaned bear cub. Tragedy strikes. This creative pair previously worked on the teams of two Oscar winning features (Zootopia & Big Hero 6) |
THE GIRL WHO CRIED PEARLS Canada Previously nominated for Madame Tutli-Putli (2007) their new visual jaw-dropper is about a homeless boy, a greedy pawn shop owner, and the miserable girl next door who as the title says. It's beautifully executed and we'll cheer loudly if it wins.. |
RETIREMENT PLAN Ireland A dryly funny short about a man fantastizing about his retirement. Though it's not as visually inventive as some of its competitors it gathers comic and dramatic momentum as it goes. The narration is by actor Domhnall Gleeson |
THE THREE SISTERS Russia Preivously nominated for the stunning We Can't Live Without Cosmos (2015). This short is about three sisters having to rent out one of their houses. It's very funny and wonderfully cleverly "flat" in visual presentation We're rooting for it to win the gold but we'd be very happy for Girl Who Cried Pearls too. |

While it wasn't a particularly strong year for this category (at least in terms of the finalist list chosen), they definitely should have made room for Eiru (from Cartoon Saloon) and Hurikan (from the Czech Republic) in the actual nominee list. Other finalists were Night Boots, Shyness of Trees, Playing God, Quinta's Ghost, Snow Bear, Cardboard, I Died in Irpin, and Autokar Though the Academy doesn't officially announce an eligibility list anymore (such a shame) according to Cartoon Brew, 113 shorts were made available to Academy voters in this category... a record number!. |
||||
| WILL WIN / SHOULD WIN? | ||||
| SHOULD? I have yet to see Butterfly before deciding my final rank but both The Three Sisters and The Girl Who Cried Pearls would make very worthy winners. WILL? Who knows! Last season my least favourite among the five took the Oscar much to my surprise. | ||||

Apocalypse in the Tropics, Seeds, My Undesirable Friends, and Cover-Up all had ample buzz but it didn't pay off. Other finalists were: 2000 Meters to Andriivka, Folktales, Co-Existence My Ass, Holding Liat, Mistress Dispeller, and Yanuni High profile films that didn't make the finals included Afternoons of Solitude, BLKNWS Terms & Conditions, Deaf President Now, Endless Cookie, Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk, Reinfenstahl and more... |

| WILL WIN / SHOULD WIN ? | ||||
| The Perfect Neighbor seems to have the winners heat at this writing. But who knows. As to who should win. I usually abstain with documentary (as I rarely see all five) but I really loved Come See Me in the Good Light | ||||
