READER'S POLL - VOTE DAILY!

HOW'D THEY GET NOMINATED?

WHO WAS SHUT OUT?

Based on precursor season, Denzel Washington (Gladiator II) had reason to believe that he would outpace Paul Newman, and tie Laurence Olivier, with only Jack Nicholson in his sights to become the most nominated male actor. The only other man who was probably close was Clarence Maclin playing himself in Sing Sing. Other hopefuls who were widely discussed but never won much traction were Adam Pearson (A Different Man), John Magaro (the lead in September 5) and Stanley Tucci (Conclave) based on the popularity of his film. At the SAG nominations it was Jonathan Bailey (Wicked) who surprised everyone by showing up in the top five.

WHO WILL WIN?

Based on precursors the statue is Kieran Culkin's to lose. But since it's inarguably a leading role, we hope there's room for real competition since the other four (all in actual supporting roles) are all doing very fine work and elevating their films. Strong lineup in this category for a change!

PREDICTION: KIERAN
ALTERNATE: none... which is a pity since Kieran is a lead actor.

WHO SHOULD WIN? NATHANIEL'S PICK

Since Culkin is an inarguable lead I couldn't in good conscience vote for him (despite loving his performance), and the others are so strong that I'm torn. In the end I suppose I'd have to circle either Yura Borisov and Guy Pearce's name (my ballot coming soon)
