A Look Back...and Forward

In part two of the conversation which began with Django Unchained and random final Oscar hunches, we hear about four actors that Joe Reid plans to snub, looooong Best Pictures that Katey Rich hasn't seen (The Last Emperor anyone?), why Nathaniel hopes Hitchcock will inspire more films like it (despite its significant flaws).

Podcast Unchained: Tarantino, Movie Gifts, Top Ten Sneaks

Is Django Unchained a masterpiece or a bloody mess? Is it worth paying for your own Oscar campaign for an indie film? Plus: sneak peaks into the top ten lists of Nathaniel R, Joe Reid, Katey Rich and Nick Davis on this latest edition of the podcast.

Comedy Globes & SAG Ensemble

For this two-part conversation we began with the Comedy or Musical category at the Golden Globes. Is Salmon Fishing at the Yemen really a comedy? We suggest a new title for the category and also share our votes for SAG's frustrating "Outstanding Cast" prize which goes under the microscope while Nathaniel fights coughing jags.

The podcast returns for another Oscar season! I'm Nathaniel R and my ol' podcast mates Joe Reid & Nick Davis are joining me this month to discuss Summer Movie Season 2012. That's a wrap on summer so we're tying it off with our idiosyncratic messy multi-colored bows...

Spread the Wealth, Worship the Leg, End the War

I couldn't let the postmortem on Oscar's 84th close without inviting my ol' podcast pals Katey, Nick and Joe to join me for one last conversation of the season. We ended up talking for over an hour. See we all share this "can't stop talking Oscar!" addiction and none of us will ever go to rehab. So you get the podcast in two parts. Part two tomorrow night.

Here's part one where we start goofy with Octavia Spencer's ubiquity and end all serious like (well, mostly) with Viola and Meryl. Join the conversation in the comments.

Topics include but are not limited to...

Podcast: Instant Reactions. Oscar Nomination Morning

Oscar Nomination Morning has always been like Christmas day to me. I sleep restlessly. I wake up early. I tear open my presence. When I first met Nick Davis ten years ago, we knew we were kindred spirits. It's also like that for him. In some ways it can be ever more exciting than Oscar Night since there's more to celebrate / complain about.

You can download the podcast on iTunes or listen right here at the bottom of the post.

A Raggedy Oscar Podcast Reunion

Surprise!

The old team is back together momentarily. Clearly we need more time than 40 minutes to get into everything that's going on in the Oscar race so this one is a totally raggedy conversation... a la Margaret and Rampart, two films that are discussed.

So welcome back to Katey, Joe, Nick from Nathaniel, your host here at The Film Experience.

Topics include but are not limited to:
• Cooking tips from The Help
The Iron Lady and Streep's hard sell for the third Oscar
• Team Margaret and Team Rampart, two wildly underseen movies that share some intuitive storytelling and vivid ensemble work.
• Critical advocacy in the age of consensus
• The silly battle lines drawn between Hugo & The Artist
• Shailene Woodley and Nick's Descendants agnosticism.

Nathaniel & Nick Circa 1986

Since Nathaniel has been gagging on Aliens and Peggy Sue Got Married for their 25th anniversary year and Nick has been revisiting Cannes 1986 in all its sidebar and competitive glory we opted to join forces for a special edition of the podcast, spinning off from the 1986 film year.

We're also discussing Robert Altman's Fool For Love (1985), why Aliens (1986) is superior to both Alien (1979) and the 1986 "Best Picture" Platoon (1986). We also dig into Oscar's Best Actress Lineup: Sigourney Weaver, Kathleen Turner, Sissy Spacek, Jane Fonda and the winner Marlee Matlin. And share our choices for best film of 1986. We both wimp out and go with ties.

"Midnight in Paris" and Oscar's New Rules

Since I never officially reviewed Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, I thought we'd have to at least cover it in discussion form. So for the latest podcast, Kurt from Your Movie Buddy and first-time guest Mark Blankenship from The Criticial Condition joined me to discuss Woody Allen's biggest hit in some time as well as Oscar's new "up to 10 nominees for Best Picture" ruling, which I recently discussed with Katey for her Kino Katey podcast.

But, you know, we can't ever shut up about Oscar, can we?

Other topics: Best Original Song, first and favorite Woody Allen pictures seen.  As always please join the conversation in the comments.

"Meek's Cutoff" and Early Cinephilia

We're switching up the guest lists, for a hopefully rotating panel. For this week's podcast we have three first time guests: Kurt (Your Movie Buddy), Michael (Serious Film and Unsung Heroes) and Robert ("Distant Relatives") and yours truly, Nathaniel.

Topics include:

  • Kelly Reichardt's invisible storytelling and Meek's Cutoff
  • Is Michelle Williams America's Tilda Swinton?
  • Robert Pattison and Water for Elephants
  • Cinephilia: When did it begin for our guests? How do their significant others deal with their movie obsessiveness?

As always the conversation can include more voices. Join us in the comments.

Jane Eyre (The New Podcast Season Begins)

New season of the podcast starts now. Though Oscar season is still many months away the Big O (and I don't mean Oprah) is not required for hearty movie conversations. Even if he likes to muscle his golden way in from time to time. In this week's episode Nick and Katey and Nathaniel have gathered to talk about the dreaminess of Michael Fassbender, the skill of Mia Wasikowska, the promise of Cary Fukunaga and drafty manor houses on the moors filled with dark secrets.

For those who haven't yet read the book or seen the movie we pull back from the spoilers so fear not. But go see the movie! All three of us were fans of this particular adaptation. Also discussed, however briefly: Rango, Certified Copy and Andrea Arnold's forthcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights. It's a big year for those Brontë girls.
