Ann Roth THE POST |
Hyper cool black and white blocking, cartoonish character specificity (McAvoy & Theron both look amazing) with 80s influences without overdoing time frame. | "Ghostly ladies" Expressive work, particularly on Kidman, with a limited color palette and then ultra feminine and many colors in that 'Impress the guest' scene. [INTERVIEW...] |
Oscar oddly went without iconic looks in its costume lineup this year when I Tonya was right there?Memorable tackiness from white trash 90s fashions to DIY skating "glamour" and those fur coats! |
As befitting a movie with a fashion milieu it looks lux but sometimes misfired (as appropriate to the plot). Love the scenes with the sewing room ladies. |
Come through gold caftan! Brilliant work on Meryl Streep (they're tight) and fine 70s work on a large cast, some fashion savvy (fundraisers) some utilatarian (newsroom). |
Finalists: Pascaline Chavanne Frantz, Lindy Hemming Wonder Woman Semi-Finalists: Jacqueline Durran Darkest Hour, Dina Collin My Cousin Rachel, Consolata Boyle Victoria and Abdul, Mayes C Rubeo Thor: Ragnarok and Kurt and Bart - Ghost in the Shell |

That enormous exterior and cramped interiors make a peculiar imposing character. The iron gain outside amplifies the drama and the school's disconnect from the outside worl. [MORE...] |
Brutalist architecture and welcome touches of spare minimalism for a maximalist visual achievement. [MORE...] |
She imagines a complete miniature world -- and places it, humorously aside our own. It's so much like our own but a lot tidier (it's new) and suburban homogenous. |
This could be a stage play since the house is the movie's only location. It's also a whole character in the film. THE SINK'S NOT BRACED YET. |
He runs with the green color scheme... even the labs feel mossy and wet. Eliza's apartment (interior and exterior alike) has such personality, too [MORE...] |

Brilliant use of the full color palette, integration of fx, and mood. Such drama in the shadows! |
Technical virtuosity, and manages it on land, air, and over and under the sea. Beautifully shot. |
The most undersung among these nominees but the bright Florida sunshine and color provides a perfect cheerful facade. |
Gorgeous classicist work in black and white wish occassional colored interludes. Breathtaking. |
What a pity not to see it on the bigscreen! She has a great eye for vistas and intimate character lighting, too. |

This Icelandic editor is something else when it comes to cool sustained action sequences. (See also John Wick) |
Expertly attuned to the rhythms of its constant music and great sense of pacing. Plus: coherent action! | Sprawling but it sure does flow superbly from offices to schools to streets to bedrooms and, most thrillingly through memory too. |
Thrillers need great editing to excel and every cut here works, amuses, or adds to the WTF is happening reveals. |
There's not an ounce of fat on this 'hella tight' movie, which offers up a mosaic of short performance-based scenes. |
Finalists: Walter Fasano for Call Me By Your Name, Sidney Wolinsky for The Shape of Water Semi-Finalists: Nick Emerson for Lady Macbeth, Andrew Weisblum for mother!, Jack Price for Ingrid Goes West, Dylan Tichenor for Phantom Thread, and Martin Walsh for Wonder Woman |

BLADE RUNNER 2049 | GHOST IN THE SHELL | OKJA | THE SHAPE OF WATER | WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES |
The hologram work on Joi is something else. A worthy successor to the original, visually, and that's quite a compliment. | The visuals at least were top-notch, particularly a truly stunning killer geisha robot attack and Major's entrances and exits | Though we've long bemoaned all CGI-characters, Okja is one of the most convincing and expressive ever. | Great work on the Creature from the Government's Lagoon Facility and there's also the gorgeous underwater scenes. | The visual fx work on the mo-cap performances is a stunning capper to a three-for-three trilogy of craft excellence. |
Finalists: Dunkirk, Star Wars: The Last Jedi Semi Finalists: Kong Skull Island, Spider-Man Homecoming, Downsizing, Thor: Ragnarok, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 |

BATTLE OF THE SEXES |
BLADE RUNNER 2049 |
DARKEST HOUR |
IT | LOGAN |
Hello, a haircut prompts a major character arc. Great work on Emma Stone's hair and 1973 styles read across the board. | Haunting character work, particularly on Jared Leto, and various replicants. Plus bruised and battered or high-tech glamour. | Oldman's major prosthetic transformation (fat suit and jowls!) doesn't look anything like prosthetics. Bonus points: KST's wig | Spooky perverse horror clown character work on Bill Skarsgård's evil demon? spirit? What is he? | Mutant weirdness (hi Caliban), plus lots of scarring and weathered work on Hugh Jackman |
Finalists: Ghost in the Shell, and Victoria and Abdul Semi Finalists: Wonder Woman, Mudbound, The Lost City of Z, Wonder, and Atomic Blonde |
