READER'S CHOICE - VOTE DAILY
HOW'D I DO ON MY PREDICTIONS?
3/5 Majorly face-planted here by trusting the precursors and going with Caitriona Balfe (Belfast) and Ruth Negga (Passing) but Oscar voters weren't playing along at opted for one of their all time favourites Judi Dench and rising star Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter)
WHO WAS LEFT OUT? | ||||
Ruth Negga, who had received nods from all but one key group (SAG, Globes, Gothams, Spirit, and BAFTA all vouched for her with only Critics Choice denying her) was the day's saddest snub. It was tragic because she deserved to take the statue! Other notable exclusions were Caitriona Balfe,(Belfast) Ann Dowd (Mass), Marlee Matlin (CODA), and Cate Blanchett (Nightmare Alley) who all had at least one precursor pointing them out.
WHO WILL WIN? | ||||
This was probably a two-fighter competition with Kirsten Dunst's forlorn drunk mother vs Ariana DeBose's take on the classic "Anita" role. But DeBose dominated all season.
WHO SHOULD WIN? | ||||
Dunst and Ellis are the only ones who made my personal ballot so I'd go with one of them.
HOW'D THEY GET NOMINATED? |
||||
45% Coattails / Role: With Olivia Colman getting so much attention as this thorny complex mother, it was natural that some would bleed over... 25% Performance. Especially since she really delivered in flashbacks 16% Film / Campaign. It had been overperforming all through precursors (if not for her) 13% Rising star / BAFTA love. 1% They finally caught up with Wild Rose and were like "whoops" |
50% Role. It's an iconic focus pulling role which has led to multiple Tony nominations, a Tony win, and an Oscar win. 19% Performance. She proved her mettle. 12% Lockstep precursor support 9% Campaign / Narrative. Pairing her with Moreno for promotion was smart - a passing of the torch 7% Film. It always helps to be in a Best Picture. 3% Celebrating Hollywood's new efforts at authentic casting |
51% She's Dame Judi Dench. One of their six all time favourite actresses 25% Campaign / Film. Focus was pushing the fim hard... though ironically Balfe and Dornan (neither nominated) did a lot of the leg work 11% Performance / Clip. That perfect closeup at film's end. 7% Role. Endearing 4% SAG Cast nomination 2% Affection for years of collaboration w/ Kenneth Branagh |
20% Performance. Few people do sadness and despair as well. 20% Large Role / Many Clips. Oscar loves drunks and longsuffering mothers - Double the Bait! 20% She's Kirsten Dunst. National treasure and significantly overdue 20% Campaign / Film. Best Picture heat warms up acting odds 12% Lockstep Precursors 8% Narrative. Real life couple with his & hers nods playing a couple |
30% Performance / Clip. She makes the most of a stock role. On fire in her big scene. 25% Role. But Oscar does love this stock role: the longsuffering supportive wife is catnip to them. 23% Film / Campaign. They like the movie 13% Rising star. The recent Emmy nods have put industry eyes on her. 6% Bonus points: Out acts Will Smith in what is probably his winning role 3% Lovecraft Country |
