4/5 I foolishly missed Nightmare Alley even though the less impressive (costume-wise) Shape of Water made the nominee shortlist.
What was left out? | ||||
The BAFTA nominated French Dispatch from the legendary Milena Canonero, plus CDG nominees like House of Gucci, The Green Knight, Coming 2 America, and other costume extravaganzas like Spencer and of course lots of contemporary beauties like Zola, No Time To Die, and In the Heights
What WILL win? | ||||
This has been Cruella's to lose since very early in 2021 though a Dune upset also feels possible.

How'd I do on my predictions?
4/5 I missed West Side Story, assumign the Academy would follow the ASC and BAFTA leads (who both left it out. But they did not.
Who was left out? | ||||
BAFTA nominated films No Time To Die and ASC nominee Belfast. We also mourn the absence of Passing and The Green Knight, two great looking films that weirdly coudln't get arrested for cinematography honors.
Who WILL win? | ||||
This is a very tough call. We think it's between Power of the Dog and Dune but surprises do happen and would any of these films make very shocking winners in this category? In the end it went to Dune as everyone expected.

How'd I do on my predictions?
4/5 Missing Power of the Dog (which had missed the Guild nomination) and predicting BAFTA nominated Production Design wonder The French Dispatch (which sadly received zero Oscar love)
What got left out? | ||||
Besides The French Dispatch other well designed and decorated movies that missed the nomination were ADG nominees No Time To Die, Licorice Pizza, Cruella, Candyman, In the Heights, Shang-Chi, and The Green Knight.
Who WILL win? | ||||
Dune appears to be the leader given all the world building.

How'd I do on my predictions?
3/5 missing both tick tick BOOM (for another musical West Side Story) and King Richard (which i foolishly switched last minute for Belfast) even though I really felt King Richard would land here. Argh
What was left out? | ||||
ACE nominees like No Time To Die, The French Dispatch, Licorice Pizza, all seemed likely too.
What WILL win? | ||||
Editing often pairs with Best Picture so Power of the Dog has to be considered a threat. Though it doesn't have the Most Editing... and it also isn't super showy in that department so we could see an upset, even if it wins Best Picture where Dune (action scenes!) or Don't Look Up (MOST EDITING) prevail. It'll be a nailbiter.

4/5 Missed Coming 2 America in favour of predicting a return for Suicide Squad since they liked the original film in this category
What was left out? | ||||
In addition to Suicide Squad other finalists that weren't selected including Nightmare Alley, West Side Story, No Time To Die, and Cyrano But even the finalist list was odd reminding us that it is impossible to ascertain what this branch is looking for. They like old age makeup until they don't. They like MOST makeup except when they don't. They don't love beauty makeup unless they do. Etcetera. The most shocking (and disappointing) misses here were undoubtedly the character work of The French Dispatch, and the prosthetics work of The Green Knight. Less surprising misses but still somewhat head-scratching whether due to genre, high profile, or worthiness were: Being The Ricardos, Electrical Life of Louis Wain, Spencer, Titane, and The Last Due |
||||
What WILL win? | ||||
With Coming 2 America and Cruella both making a strong showing at the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild Awards and Dune well respected across the board with voters we think this is a three way race. At the time of the nominations we guessed Dune would take it. By the end of the voting period we switched to Eyes of Tammy Faye which proved wise.
What SHOULD win? | ||||
Here's my personal ballot. |
BEST VISUAL EFFECTSEverything below gets an up arrow since it made the finals! We correctly guessed 9/10 finalists here missing only Black Widow. We thought there wouldn't be room for every Marvel film (but there was) and guessed that the every frame visual fx of Tomorrow War would squeak in. We were wrong but we prefer Black Widow so, a mild "yay" from us. Tier 1 - Predictions |

SPIDER-MAN NO WAY HOME |

How'd I do on my predictions?
Unfortunately I removed Free Guy at the last minute -- what was I thinking -- so I only went 4/5 in this category assuming that Shang-Chi would fall instead. This branch's avoidance of the Godzilla films is really odd given how spectacular they are as visual effects reels.
What was left out? | ||||
Godzilla vs Kong should have been there. The other finalists that missed were The Matrix Resurrections, Ghostbusters Afterlife, Black Widow, and Eternals Preliminary bake-off voting settled on the ten films noted above which means that visual effects heavy movies like Cruella, Finch, F9, Jungle Cruise, The King's Man, Mortal Kombat, Space Jam a New Legacy, Tomorrow War, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. They also eliminated movies that used visual effects in a supporting capacity like The Green Knight, Don't Look Up, and A Quiet Place Part 2 |
||||
What WILL win? | ||||
It would be shocking if any of the entries could overthrow Dune.
What SHOULD win? | ||||
While this lineup is great fun, it's Dune that most thoroughly transports you to a jawdropping other world. My personal ballot |
