COSTUME DESIGN
|
||||
Beauty and the Beast Jacqueline Durran CDG Nom, Critics Choice Nom, BAFTA The visibility is there as well as the iconic costumes recreated. |
Darkest Hour Jacqueline Durran Durran's work is often amazing but WW II government dramas are relatively staid in the costume arena. |
Phantom Thread CDG Nom | Critics Choice Nom, BAFTA It's a fashion drama and he's a great designer. |
The Shape of Water The costumes aren't as showy as the rest of its design elements. |
Victoria and Abdul Consolata Boyle Boyle gets to costume Britian and Indian VIPs this time around and the clothes get plot points, too. |
Who was left out: Color me stunned that The Post's gold caftan, those Amazons in Wonder Woman, the civil war era deglam in The Beguiled, the circus of The Greatest Showman, the DIY skating rink "finery" of I Tonya and so on couldn't get traction here.
Will win/ Should win: This goes to Phantom Thread easily, doesn't it? (or will enough voters just vote "most" with Beauty and the Beast?)
CINEMATOGRAPHY The Nominees are... |
||||
Blade Runner 2049 |
Darkest Hour |
Dunkirk wins: -- |
Mudbound wins: NYFCC |
Shape of Water wins: LAFCA Win |
Who was left out: Since this is the exact same list that the Cinematographer's guild came up with arguably nobody. But there was other great and/or high profile work out there as in Wonder Wheel, The Post, Call Me By Your Name, Phantom Thread, Beach Rats, Logan, mother!, Lost City of Z and so on and so on
Will win/ Should win: My suspicion is that The Shape of Water will take at least a few of the tech Oscars and its haul will include this one since it's memorable looking and a del Toro film has already won in this category (Pan's Labyrinth). But my heart is with Oscar finally crowning Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049) who has waited for this for far too long and look what he's done... AGAIN on the screen. Just beautiful
PRODUCTION DESIGN The Nominees are... |
||||
Blade Runner 2049 wins: LAFCA They love Gassner and the first film is arguably the most influential art direction of the last 30 years. |
Beauty & the Beast wins: -- She could well be competing against herself. But will they go with the noisy Disney recreation or the war drama? |
Darkest Hour BAFTA, ADG She could well be competing against herself. But will they go with the noisy Disney recreation or the war drama instead? |
Dunkirk wins: -- He could be competing with himself: see also The Greatest Showman |
Shape of Water wins: -- Apart from Blade Runner this may be the showiest job of the year. Totally sells the fable and Cold War noirishness |
Who was left out? The Post and Downsizing and Murder on the Orient Express seemed like Oscary options.
Will win / Should win? I suspect this goes to Shape of Water but Blade Runner 2049 might prove formidable competition
FILM EDITING The Nominees are... |
||||
Baby Driver |
Dunkirk |
I Tonya |
Shape of Water |
Three Billboards |
Who was left out? Who wasn't? We have to start with the economic and graceful comedy of Lady Bird and the whipsmart tense editing of Get Out. But really there are so many goodies each year that get left out in favor of simply Best Picture heat.
Will win / Should win: This could be a free-for-all. The only one that seems unlikely as a winner is I Tonya
VISUAL EFFECTS The Nominees are... |
||||
Blade Runner |
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 |
Kong Skull Island |
Star Wars: The Last Jedi |
War of the Planet of the Apes |
Who was left out? Shape of Water, Dunkirk, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Okja, and Alien Covenant were the finalists. The Semi finalists before that were Ghost in the Shell, Beauty and the Beast, Jumanji, Justice League, Life, Logan, Pirates fo the Caribbean, Spider-Man Homecoming, Thor Ragnarok, and Wonder Woman.
will win / should win: Blade Runner 2049 needs to win something and it might be this. But in all honesty shouldn't the prize go to War of the Planet of the Apes since that trilogy has had stupendous effects throughout and still no Oscar.
MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING The nominees are |
||||
|
||||
Darkest Hour |
Victoria & Abdul |
Wonder |
||
who was left out: Guardians of the Galaxy, I Tonya, Bright, Ghost in the Shell, were the other finalists
will win / should win: One imagines the Churchill drag will win the race. It is pretty flawless as prosthetic transformations go!
