It remains shocking that Ruth E Carter wasn't nominatd for Dolemite is My Name but the costuming branch was lazily focused on the Best Picture field this year (but still looked past longtime costume designer Daniel Orlandi for Ford v Ferrari. Other rich costuming jobs they passed on included Hustlers and Harriet .

The only guild nominee not to be nominated was Ford V Ferrari so we assume it was in the dread six spot. Other gorgeously shot movies they could have gone with included Parasite and Ad Astra. But we're probably saddest to see no nomination for Claire Mathon this year who astonished with the double feature Atlantics / Portrait of a Lady on Fire

We're shocked that they've once completely snubbed Mark Friedberg who designed Joker -- he's done EVERYTHING (genres, prestige directors, best pic nominees) and he can't get arrested with the Academy. Though it didn't have a campaign it's a shame the designers didn't think about Ad Astra here either. If the films had been better one suspects they might have also embraced the Most Design of either Aladdin or Dumbo

It's sad that Jennifer Lame was skipped for Marriage Story and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood continues the trend of Tarantino pictures being ignored in editing. Some definitely argued that the documentary Apollo 11 warranted inclusion here.

The other five finalists were Alita: Battle Angel, Captain Marvel, Cats, Gemini Man, and Terminator Dark Fate. Weirdly Godzilla King of Monsters and Ad Astra, both infinitely superior to the messy fx in Cats were not on the shortlist.
