Anne Goes Overboard

Jason from MNPP here with a look at some of the new hot movie news! Okay it's a day old but I feel as if y'all might have THOUGHTS on this: Anne Hathaway's been set to star in The Lifeboat, an adaptation of a 2013 book by Charlotte Rogan, for awhile now. It apparently tells the tale as old as Titanic of a sinking luxury liner and some Sophie's Choices that must be made regarding one's ultimate survival.

Does it make me an old person or just a person with a very nearly unbearable slash extraordinary sense of refinement that I first picture Tallulah Bankhead using diamonds as a fishing lure before I see Kate Winslet hocking a loogie when I read that plot synopsis? Either way it's a fertile playground for a filmmaker and they just went and hired one of the fertile-est around: Joe Wright is going to direct the thing, making it his post-Pan project. He's really into boats right now!

Anne is slowly but surely manuevering her way back in front of the public after The World decided we all - her included! - needed a break after that very loud Oscar win of hers. She's received good notices OffBroadway and she's got that beige-fantasia by Nancy Meyers coming out in September. I'll be skipping that, but the words "Joe" and "Wright" put next to each other are an immediate "yes whatever I'll watch whatever, Rooney Mara as a Colorform Sprite, sure" for me. You?

Yes on the premise and Anne, Maybe So on Joe Wright (don't think he's all that, tbh)

I am already WAY more interested in this than in Wright's Pan thing.

And no, you are not alone in thinking of Tallulah Bankhead whenever the word "lifeboat" is mentioned.

I'm with you and Denny, I hear Lifeboat and I think of that whiskey voiced wonder Tallulah. Maybe Joe Wright will find a way to "toss Anne overboard" (sorry) and move his muse Keira Knightley into the lead. I'd much rather see that picture.

@joel6 - For me Lifeboat is associated immediately with Hitchcock & Bankhead, and always shall be.
I am stunned that Joe Wright is signing on for something with Anne Hathaway that has all of the trademarks of a Keira Knightley project. Sorry for my bias but I don't really like the thought of Hathaway stealing Joe Wright from his muse. Now that KK has had her baby, I thought I would be hearing of a lovely project in 2016 for my favourite pairing. If Wright has to work with other actresses (than Knightley) could he at least go for Emily Blunt or Kate Winslet?
I like Hathaway but considering "Becoming Jane" & "One Day" she isn't as good at period drama, nor can she do an English accent. I just wish this announcement were for either Knightley, Blunt, or Winslet than Hathaway for this project.
Has anyone out there read this book? What's it like?

Anne on a Lifeboat sounds like saltpeter to me. Nathaniel, have you ever predicted who will be the next Hepburn or Streep? They barely intersected in 1981 and it seems to be the time when a new actress will take over the long-term Oscar longevity legacy (and is nominated often from youth all the way to senior). Not sure if it's Jennifer Lawrence or someone yet to come.

The Lifeboat is actually feminist, there's a moment in the novel when it's the guys vs the girls. Then it becomes this morality play towards the end. Pretty exciting and gritty stuff. I'm sure Anne would be great at it.

I don't think she's been away long enough, sure she is quite a fine actress in a Natalie Portman type way but her win was way over praised I still don't get why she won, sometimes like Nat has said certain popular and winning perfs just don't stick with you and her Les Mis one felt fake, she needs another RGM to show her acting chops again.

No way you can hear "Lifeboat" and not immediately think of Tallulah Bankhead, playing, as always Tallulah Bankhead.

But my second thought was of the 1957 Tyrone Power movie, "Abandon Ship," which is the classic who-shall-we-throw-overboard-to-survive film.

When I saw that photo I thought she was going to star in a remake of Hello, Dolly!
