P.S. If you were interviewing Mike Mills (Beginners), actors Ben Foster and Olivia Colman, and The Artist team, what would you be inclined to ask them? Hypothetically speaking. It's not like I'm about to... ;)

If I could talk to people whose work I love about the Oscars, I would change the subject. It would be just too dispiriting/irritating (more to me than them, I hope), since I guess at least 90% of them haven't won.
And a bit off-topic, but did Cosmo the dog "talk" only in the trailer of Beginners or I just happened to see a version of the film where he didn't? Maybe the subtitles were missing or something.
If I could talk to MELISSA LEO about the Oscars, I would tell her that EVERY TIME I SEE THE WORD "CONSIDER" I THINK OF HER.
Seriously I just saw a for your consideration ad and the first thing that popped into my head was Melissa in the fur coat. That ad really worked!
ask Berenice and the Artist Team how much English they knew before the movie and how much they now now. Berenice was so cute at the Hollywood Film Awards, she reminded me of Marion Cotillard when she was doing the awards run for La Vie En Rose and could barely speak English but always charmed her way out of it.
Olivia Colman! I wonder if she's used to the attention (is she aware of the attention)? she is receiving for her film, oo and have her talk about The Iron Lady and her role as Meryl's daughter and if she has plans to do more movies or where she wants to go in the future. What does she think of Jeff Wells support of her film? What does she think of the Oscars and possibility of a nomination?
If I could talk to film distributors about the Oscars, I would tell them that I am sick and tired of people who don't live in the NY/LA area not getting to see Oscar-buzzed films like We Need to Talk About Kevin and Albert Nobbs until after the nominations have already been announced.
John T -- actually i think you should talk to the Academy about that themselves. If they would change the rules away from "qualifying" loopholes. you would see changes in that regard.
i've always said and maintain that the world would be a better place if fimls were required to open in at least the top 6 markets or thereabouts in order to qualfy (which would make the awards much more about the year they're supposed to be about then this totally unfortunate thing where the calendary year is this abstraction and the audience is not part of the equation. I think every film that wants awards should have to present itself to movie audiences. Not just a few people in LA for one week of the year.

If I could talk to Brian Gazer about the Oscars, I would tell him that I DESPERATELY want a Julia reunion at the Oscars and therefore want Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave to present Best Picture together, so he'd damn better make that happen!!!!.
If I could talk to Joseph Gordon-Levitt about the Oscars I would ask him which other best Actor candidate I could release a sex scandal about so he could take their place for 50/50.
I'm confused about "The Artist." This is a French film, right? Why wasn't it France's submission? I guess b/c it was made in the US? Are there subtitles, or is it all in English? Do the characters mouth English, or is the conceit that we're reading their thoughts throughout the film? Please help if you've seen the film.
Riley --SPOILER -- France couldn't submit it because, from my understanding, less thatn 50% of dialogue can be in english and even though there's extremely little dialogue what there is in English.
If I could talk to the Music Branch about the Oscars, I would tell them that they need to reconfigure the evaluation process for all music awards. The possibility for vindictive voting (anonymous ballots and the magical scoring threshold that is so easily thwarted) and loss of meaning in the use of cobbled together clips of music-containing scenes is detrimental to the process. For example, if I understand the process correctly, "Marcy's Song" from Martha Marcy May Marlene would be screened without the proceeding few lines of dialog that set the entire context for why that song is in the film at all. That...kind of defeats the point of that song which is arguably a great moment of original music in film.
If the Academy is that concerned with maintaining a certain quality threshold in that category alone, it puts into question the screening process--or lack there of--in other similarly confusing categories. Why do make-up nominees get shortlisted and then voted on while we don't even get a hint as to what's going on with music until popular choices in the press are disqualified after the ballots are mailed in? It's maddening.

Lola - I remember someone right here commenting that year that in fact Cottiliard was more fluent in English than she sometimes pretended to be in the run-up to the Oscars, but I can't verify that as fact.
If I could talk to Ben Foster about the Oscars, I'd tell him that he needs to step out of this action flick kick he's in. But mostly, I'd ask him about his inspiration for Charlie Prince in 3:10 to Yuma. Was the character written to be that fussy or was it his own idea?

If I could talk to the leading ladies of this season's Oscar race, I would tell them that they should all get on the stage when they announce the winner for Best Actress, à la Emmy for best Actress in a Comedy.
