Deborah Kerr and a Kangaroo
This randomness is brought to you by a screening of The Sundowners (1960) last night. This footage is not from the movie but the "on location" footage. Ish't it hilarious (and totally creepy?) that the monster tries to use Kerr's jacket as a pouch?
I'm trying to combat my fear of kangaroos in the hopes that one day someone will buy me an all expenses vacation to Australia. In the movie the evil-propelled marsupials with the tyranossaurus-rex arms just hop through the scene on occassion FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER and the actors don't even flinch! For that alone you'd think they would have finally given Kerr the gold? (The Sundowners was her last of six Oscar nominations -- see previous post). I would have ruined every take by shrieking.

So did the film change your mind at all about Kerr? I know you've had mixed opinions of her in the past, but I just love her (particularly in the Sundowners). She's one of my favorites - although I am a sucker for the "calm, cool exterior with a boiling, red-hot interior" actresses.
When I was 11, I went to an Australian wildlife park and a kangaroo tried to fight me. I hope that helps rationalize your irrational fear of kangaroos. ^^
Rose -- i did really like her in this one and loved her in Black Narcissus. It's really only Separate Tables that I think she's ghastly in.
Yeah, it's like she never topped Black Narcissus, and the Academy was waiting for her to do that instead of giving her an award for the wrong movie. Although they should just kidnap Audrey Hepburn's Oscar and give it to her.
1960? Hmm, isn't this the movie where Kerr is taking a bath and a kangaroo stabs her to death but it turns out it was Anthony Perkins disguised as his favorite, dead pet?
Oh, right. Wrong blonde. :p
LOL I live in Sydney and we only see kangaroos in the zoo.
Nathaniel, we combat the kangaroos hopping around our streets by having Olivia Newton Johns on every corner.
Gosh I LOVE Deborah Kerr and "The Sundowners". Nathaniel, Rose beat me to it but I'm glad you've somewhat changed your mind about her! You should watch "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" - her and Mitchum really had fabulous chemistry.
I love how she is so maternal in this clip, even with a little Kangaroo...She was just the best in my eyes. And so beautiful!
Glenn -- okay now i definitely have to come visit.
James T -- lolz
