It's been a while since I've watched this but I'm pretty sure it's Down in the Delta, directed by Maya Angelou.

I actually thought it was "Ray" at first (like from the scenes of Ray as a child)...but yeah, the names you put threw me off. Good going for another tough one, Nathaniel =)
