COMMENT DU JOUR
DAY FOR NIGHT -another great movie about movies

I'm not sure if I like it more than 8 1/2 or Singing in the Rain, but when the majestic trumpet music plays, it reminds me of why I love cinema in the first place. The actors are terrific in this film as well. However, nothing will top Topsy-Turvy for me about the mystery, repetition, and heartbreak of the artistic process.❞ -Lars

Say What? Cate and Jessica

Glenn here. The Golden Globes are an endless source of "what is happening there?" fun. We already asked what you thought was going on with Meryl, Emma and Harvey and now Jessica Chastain's endlessly entertaining Facebook page posted this photo of the two-time Oscar nominee laughing hysterically a "naughty" Cate Blanchett joke on the Globes' red carpet. But what did Cate say?

As I watched the Golden Globes with Nathaniel and The Boyfriend, the topic of Cate's Australianness came up. In that, she doesn't sound Australian anymore. She never really did. However, watching her at the awards on Sunday night - and this entire year back to the interview trail for Blue Jasmine - and the way she just has no time for anybody's bull is the most Australian thing of all. Her comment about Ryan "I hated every second of that" Seacrest swept across Twitter like a wildfire, as did her back-handed compliment to U2: "Your first album was really great." And let us not forget her oughta-be-famous appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman earlier this year. So what could she have possibly said to make Jessica react that way?

How can you not love her? Instead of trying to be "likable", she says whatever she feels and yet we still adore her.

My guess for what she said to Jessica Chastain is:

Cate: "Did you hear about Meryl Streep trying to torpedo Emma Thompson's Oscar chance at the NBR the other day? Meryl gurl, give it up! I'm winning this year."

Cate: I just left the loo. Guess who is wearing granny panties under her granny curtains dress?

Cate: I snorted career dreams as a drug on the way over here. Want to share a whiff?

JChas: 'So many of wannabe b*tches with OTP frocks tonight...'
Cate: 'You're so right, Jess... Have you seen Amber Heard's dress? Most pretentious look I've seen since I unsubscribed from Gwyneth's goop newsletter'
JChas: 'LOOOOL'

Apparently Cate has a "cultivated" Australian accent, one three types. See here: http://dialectblog.com/2011/07/10/types-of-australian-accents/

Ryan T, I'm voting for yours over mine, haha.

Cate definitely still sounds Australian - just not your stereotypical bogan Australian (ala Steve Irwin, Julia Gillard, Paul Hogan). She sounds like a white, middle-class, private girl school, university educated Melburnian. She's also had the same stage-training as another actor - Geoffrey Rush - who also speaks with that cultivated Melburnian accent.

I'm Australian and I recognise Cate's accent as being so as well...! Aussies don't all spund the same, but her accent is still Australian.

Cate: "To Quote Bertolt Brecht: Unhappy the land that is in need of heroes"
Jessica: "Gets me every time!"

LMAO. Strange, I watched the red carpet coverage and saw when she hugged Leo, but missed what she whispered. Love her even more now.
