Curio: Lucy Liu, Artist
Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 10:15AM Alexa here with your weekly art break. Lucy Liu made the surprise announcement recently that she'd had a baby boy via surrogate, congrats to her! In following some links I was also surprised to see that she'd launched a website dedicated to her art, under her own name.
As we've posted before, Lucy had been making paintings under the pseudonym Yu Ling, but now she is ready to unveil new, varied works without the pseudonym. Her use of media has expanded from painting to screenprint, sculpture, and fiber.

I'm a bigger fan of these new pieces: they are more personal, risky, and arresting. Above is a piece she made in response to 9/11, including photographs she took of the World Trade Center. You can see everything on her website, which includes her artist statements and some videos showcasing her creation of the work in her studio.

i'm having a hard time seeing a through line in her work but maybe she's testing out inspirations and will find her voice soon. it's promising.
I see a lot of phallic imagery in her work leading up to the last piece, so I see a through line of sorts.

I'm seeing spinal cords. Eye of the beholder and all...
It definitely has anatomical imagery. She also likes connections and lines now. Little tiny lines making bigger images, long lines connecting and destroying images.
I actually liked her older work a lot, and I definitely see the expansion of those ideas here. She's freer to be more political in her work now that people know she's Lucy Liu, not just a traditional Japanese painter. There was an aggression in what she did with watercolor, specifically pertaining to women and power. It's there in this collection, though not as literal.
Wow. I'm really surprised. I had no idea. She's very talented. Her eye for texture is wonderful. Beautiful pieces.
