Say What? John Boyega
Monday, November 28, 2016 at 12:00PM
Manuel here with a pretty picture to get our week started.
What is John Boyega thinking about as he shoots scenes for the sequel for that other sci-fi franchise-to-be Pacific Rim: Maelstorm?

I wonder if I'm going to fight TR-8R again for the Star Wars sequel.
Boyega: I have to give a more charismatic, franchise starting, performance than the guy from Sons of Anarchy did last time? I love those odds.
On the other set there's always someone to zip up my boots.
"Even Jennifer Lawrence couldn't get out of her X-Men contract, so I'm probably stuck. Maybe I'll get lucky like Emma and Shailene and the franchise will get canceled early."
Dave S.: You're comparing three, TERRIBLE, franchises to Pacific Rim? Look, there'll always be franchises. ALWAYS. And, no, I'm not going to get too defensive and say the original was A grade cinema. The basic idea probably could have been (less awkward dialogue and ESPECIALLY a stronger turn from Charlie Hunnam), but it'll probably go down as a B+ proof of concept more than anything else. But that joke is trying to put down a genuinely promising franchise a little too much. Shia LaBeouf was stuck in the Bayformers series. Daniel Craig was stuck in Spectre. And, yes, JLaw, Emma Stone and Shailene Woodley were stuck in the X-Men, TASM and Divergent franchises. "Stuck" implies mediocre to bad, and we can't really know that yet.
Pacific Rim was lots and lots of fun - Charlie Hunnam was expectedly terrible. Very very small shoes to fill
This was filmed at my local beach, North Cronulla in the southern suburbs of Sydney. What is he thinking? Well if I could have gotten close enough I would have asked but my guess would be: "Damn! This Aussie sand gets in everywhere".
Why are they doing a sequel to "Pacific Rim" ?! I mean it was at best ok
Reasonable people can disagree on the merits of "Pacific Rim". I think it's doing alright for itself with or without my approval. (For the record: I didn't hate it, but don't really need to see more of that world.)
But I was really thinking about it more from the perspective of performers juggling multiple franchises where one is clearly lower priority/prestige (like J.Law) or where the obligations of the sequel machine keep them occupied and less available for more varied or interesting work.
You're all really silly. Of course he is thinking of the best way to propose to me. Stay tuned.
"I wonder which of my male co-stars I'll get shipped with in this one."
You know he just has this verse from "Uptown Funk" playing in his mind over and over...
I'm too hot (hot damn)
Called a police and a fireman
I'm too hot (hot damn)
Make a dragon wanna retire man
I'm too hot (hot damn)
Bitch say my name you know who I am
