if it was up to you to decide, would you release the official rankings in categories (who came second, third etc on the race) of old oscar ceremonies? or would that take away the fun of endless speculating? is there a particular race you would want to know the official tally of votes?
Do you think we will return to the good old days of the 5-place Best Picture field, and if so, what circumstances would bring this beautiful thing about?
What is your go to movie concession purchase?
What is your favorite non-nominated performance from each of the five titans of the acting Oscar nominations? (Meryl Streep, Katharine Hepburn, Jack Nicholson, Bette Davis and Laurence Olivier)
What movie prop would you like to own and why? Something famous like Rosebud, or something more obscure?
Given the landscape of the cinema world of 2015, who do YOU think would best personify the year, and therefore present the award for Best Motion Picture in two weeks.
Seeing as it is nearly Oscar time, I'll ask you an Oscars question, then we can focus on caring about other things, like next year's Oscars.
2010 - 2015. Which is your absolute favourite line-up that the Academy nominated in any one acting category from any of those years. Can be personal favourite, acting perfection or just plain good decision making by the Academy that really stood out to you and you have very little problem with anything about or anyone in that category. (We'll exclude this year as we've talked about it quite enough already I think and there's only more discussions to come)
What's one movie and one performance on your personal ballot totally off Oscar's radar that you wish they'd have noticed (other than correcting category fraud)?
In honor of the BAFTA's: A British accent notoriously gets a lot of actors in trouble. Which non- British performer had the best British accent/performance? For this question you can include Irish or Scottish if you like.
Which inactive Whedonverse actors would you like to see pop in Joss's next projects?
What is your ideal movie watching environment? Do you enjoy the theater-going experience or do you prefer watching it comfortably in your couch or bed? Do you like watching films in a group or can you only concentrate when you're alone? Or is it situational?
For me, if it's a film I'm watching for the first time I HAVE to be alone. Especially if I don't know someone's movie viewing habits? Like, seriously, please do not try to talk to me because I will kick you out of my house.
What's your favorite performance given by an animal actor?
For actor and actress
a) which two-time winner do you think is most likely to win a third
b) which one-time winner do you think is most likely to win a second
c) which three-or-more-time nominee is most likely to win a first?
Who would you stake your life on being the successor to Streep, Hepburn and Davis? You may NOT choose I don't know and you really will not die if you are wrong. X
Which popular actresses of the past decade or two did you think would have an Oscar nom by now--and what do you think it'll take for them to get one?
Heya Nathaniel
What's the greatest piece of promotional swag you have ever received and why?
Will we use your birthday this year to celebrate 50 years of The Omen (40 for the original and 10 for the remake)? 2016 also marks the Gregory Peck centennial.
If the Oscars for a given year were decided ten years after the fact, do you think Brokeback Mountain would be nearing its Oscar win or would Crash still get the gold? (Is there any film from the 2005 lineup that you think wouldn't have be nominated?)
Also, I love Marcelo's question. I've often wondered it myself.
What do you think of "The Grifters" (1990)?
I just recently saw it and think it's glorious for its greek tragedy meets pulp fiction style.
Hands on Anjelica Huston's second best work (after Morticia of course) and The Bening is such a hoot!
I recently went through a lot of Kurosawa's filmography and realized I've never heard you discuss him. What do you think of him as a writer/director? Favourites of his work?
Since it's election year I was wondering what is your favorite political film? And if there was a film being made about this year's election who would you cast as Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders?
Since you began watching the Oscars, what upset win truly SHOCKED you the most (besides "Trash")?
Is it just me or do this decade's Best Picture winners feel more forgettable than usual? If The Revenant wins this year, could we in for the worst streak of winners since ... the '80s?
Any old features from your site that you miss the most?
(I was thinking of this question because I kind of wish that you did a 20:16 for this year's best picture nominees. You don't necessary have to honor this request while answering this question haha.)
We know you read other film/tv sites and link to interesting stuff weekly, but do you listen to other performing arts-related podcasts, and if so, what are your favorites?
Another accents-inspired question...what's your favourite performance by someone who you think is actually doing pretty ropy accent work? Also inspired in part by the flak Anne Hathaway received for One Day since, even though the accent is dreadful, she's actually giving a warm, low-key performance.
Nathaniel,
If Carol had been filmed at the time the story goes(1950’s), which actresses of that time would you put in the roles of Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara ? Joan Crawford and Audrey Hepburn ? Bette Davis and Debbie Reynolds – they were mother and daughter in The Catered Affair(1956) ? Lana Turner and Sandra Dee - mother and daughter in Imitation of Life(1959) ? What is your free personal choice?
And if you could change the gender of the protagonists ? Who would you choose ? George Clooney and Channing Tatum ? Brad Pitt and Ansel Elgort ? Leonardo DiCaprio and Nat Wolff ?
With male protagonists instead of female ones, do you think that the movie would have been better in the box office ?
Is your pining for certain actresses (Moore, Bening, Pfeiffer) enhanced because they have been brilliant without the Oscars to show for them?
I'm not saying you wouldn't like them if they had Oscars on their first tries, but if all three had been appreciated immediately with Oscars for Boogie Nights, The Grifters and Dangerous Liasons (or The Fabulous Baker Boys), would you appreciate them the same?
I guess my real question is, do you appreciate them more because they have been overlooked or were overlooked for so long?
Since there's been talk of how sweet it would be to see Leo and Kate both win Oscars this year, I've been thinking about recent screen couples that have captured audiences' imaginations in that way, and I couldn't think of any quite on that level. Are there any post-Titanic screen couples you think of as legendary pairings (Cate and Rooney, sure, but I'm also accounting for pop culture impact, which I'm not sure they'll ever achieve)? Which recent screen couple could give us a feel-good moment 15 or 20 years down the line if they win Oscars on the same night?
What is your favorite example of male objectification in a film?
For something more Oscar-y, do you think it's more impressive to have more nominations but only one win, or less nominations but two wins? Think Judi Dench vs. Maggie Smith.
After the surprise Oscar win by Marisa Tomei a million years ago, the amazing goddess Fanny Arden said that she thought Hollywood didn't know what to do with her, and that she would have a very different career if she was european. Do you think there is another (others) American actress (s) who fit into that category?
Genuine curiosity: how did you come up with the term actressexual? Stroke of fabulous gay genius or is there a story behind it?
Would a movie based on your life be called a comedy, drama, thriller, horror or some weird category in Netflix that strangely has 20 other similar titles? Who would play you in a movie and what is his motivation?
