Movie News in 4 Questions and a Video
Today's movie news offered questions and head scratchers more than usual. So I’ll present you with the questions and maybe you can help me with the answers. Or just join in the bewilderment:
• Why would David Fincher want to direct the sequel to World War Z? Obviously Pitt is a favorite of his but a sequel, really? Is this related to the fact that HBO passed on the two series he was developing for the past couple of years?
• How will Margot Robbie play 4 foot 9 trapeze artist Lillian Leitzel in Queen of the Air? Will they employ the inverse of whatever they did to make Meryl Streep taller in Julie and Julia (2009)?
• Do we care about the feud between The Rock and Vin Diesel? And doesn’t “candy ass” sound like a euphemism for something?
• What was the extent of Tony Kushner’s involvement in the script for Fences? It was always known that they were working from an August Wilson penned screenplay that both Kushner and Denzel Washington worked on polishing.
• And finally, if you've googled "Who is Awkwafina?" after the news broke out about the cast for Ocean's 8, here's a clue:
Take it away, dear readers!

You're right, Candy-ass does sound euphemistic....but seriously could not care less about Vin Diesel and The Rock having a dick-measuring contest. They're both the same person!
Loving Awkwafina though. Her comedic skills shine in that video. Can't wait to see her interact with Bullock and Blanchett. Seems like she can hold her own.
And doesn’t “candy ass” sound like a euphemism for something? It means gay.
Maybe Kushner's revisions were surgical in not interrupting the integrity of Wilson's text.
David Fincher prefers working with large budgets. Not being a writer-director has him at the mercy of studio commissioned scripts.
They should have called it "8 Vaginas" (a la 8 Femmes), but I'm still excited..especially now.
Fincher seems to be moving more and more into commercial territory? Maybe he always was and its more evident now, but I miss the guy with an edge that made Zodiac or Fight Club.
If Fincher plans to adapt the book, it could be great!
More intriguing than Margot Robbie playing a 4 foot 9 somebody is actually how Margot keeps scoring so many roles in high profile films? I know she's every straight dude fantasy girl at the moment, but come on...I can list at least 10 women more interesting for that project.
Hollywood gets obsessed with whatever IT girl of the moment happens to be (in studio eyes, she is preferably white, blonde, pretty, sexy in a bikini, and under 30). Are Jennifer Lawrence or Margot Robbie really the best actresses out there? No. It's all about the bottom line and meeting male fantasy. For older gals, Ocean's Ocho!
Why would Pitt drag Fincher into a sequel for a movie that wasn't that great to begin with? ( Enough with these zombies already!!!) Can these two talented gentlemen join forces to create an ORIGINAL film? They could not find ONE single Latina actress to join the cast of the caper movie? The Rock and Vin " Candy -ass" Diesel should just do a gay lover story abut pro-wrestlers. ( I always thought Rock was complaining about Eastwood Jr? )
/3rtful - it's true Fincher isn't a writer-director, but he can option books and commission screenwriters. He has done that in the past. So he isn't without options.
V - I think we all know why Robbie is very busy. You hinted about it in your comment and May Bell spelled it out. Don't think there's more to be said. That said however she's a good actress who's exciting to watch.
Talking of Vin Diesel, does he still 'Date in Europe'?
I haven't read anything more than a headline about the Diesel/Johnson feud, but how can anyone think it's real? I instantly figured it had to be a joke or marketing play or both.
Also, I know J.Law and Robbie's success has at lot to do with their looks but I find both to be ligitimately talented and interesting to watch. Robbie in particular is making some cool choices. Anyone see Z for Zachariah? She was great in that.
TK spoke at a conference I attended in the spring and said his position on Fences was more akin to that of a dramaturg. He reiterated Wilson's idea that it would be improper for a white man to adapt or direct a film of one of his plays. He seemed to imply, though he did not state, that either Wilson or Washington would receive the screenwriting credit. I left under the impression that the screenplay would be very similar to the play text.
Charles O got the answer we were looking for! thanks
I'm on Vin Diesel's side with this feud. Honestly, as someone who was once a fan of Dwayne Johnson. Dwayne lately has become full of it. Wrestling fans these days don't like him very much anymore. In reality, his recent return to the WWE at first seemed great but then it became lackluster. Especially as he started off insulting John Cena and is now Cena's bitch while lying to the fans about this and that. Quite frankly, he's become everything he fought against. He's now the roody-poo candy-ass kung-pow bitch who just shows up to hype up whatever bullshit Vince McMahon wants fans to eat and like it.
We're all just hoping Diesel and Rock solve this with a jello wrestling match.
