Praising Jared Leto's Sartorial Style

by Murtada

Will Smith is a big movie star and has been one for a very long time. What would he choose to wear to promote his new superhero movie at fancy premieres in New York and London?

Why brown and blue suits, as if he's going to the latest formal after work function...

Maybe Smith’s cool movie star days are behind him. He's now dad to Jaden and Willow who are the current arbiters of style in the Smith family. How about Joel Kinnaman then? He’s rising star who hopes to go up to the next level with his first above the line part in a major studio release. What would he wear to to the film’s premieres? How can he ensure his pictures are talked about?

Same.

The press tour for Suicide Squad has been exhausting. No one with even the tiniest interest in movies could escape the constant onslaught. So it was a breath of fresh air every time Jared Leto appeared on the red carpet.

No boring blue / brown banker’s suits for him. He’s a movie star not a corporate drone trying to rise above middle management. Colorful, different silhouettes made him stand out. Not only among his many other male co-stars but among all other male stars who ventured out this summer to shell out for their movies. Because those others mostly stuck to dad style. Even Swedish Tarzan didn't try very hard to impress.

I’m not defending Leto's shenanigans, which are plenty and plenty annoying.  I just like to look at him. Specially on the red carpet.

Earlier in 2016 at the Oscars and at a Gucci fashion show

Some might have issues with color or fit. Some might say he's in a rut with one designer, Alessandro Michele of Gucci. But there’s no denying he always tries to bring it. Now just cool it with the dead rats.

And yet he was endlessly mocked. Why does no one mock dreary red carpet suits from about 99% of male stars? Again not defending Leto because it seems he has no sense of humor, as he didn’t respond too well to the ribbing. See Jared, I was trying to write something positive about you but you make it so very hard. Still can’t wait to see you what you’ll wear next time you go out of the house.

What do you think of Leto's fashion choices?

Leto obviously is not afraid to make a fashion statement

I don't mind Will's brown suit because that lavanduh tie and the shoes brings it all together but that blue suit reeks of "minimum effort".

Joel came to slay.

Jared. He gets major props for being interesting but I don't know where he thought he was going with that schoolgirl green coat. I get the color choices of that outfit (Joker!) but that was one hell of a misfire.

Since Gucci changed hands a while back, their tacky/chitz 60-70's aesthetic bewilders the hell out of me but I give them points for having a distinctive look that is their own. You just know when someone is wearing Gucci these days after two seconds of looking at them.

Fashion expectations for movie stars are a thing for women. A handsome man in a suit will never be boring when he's handsome and the suit fits him crisp. Jared Leto has always been nonconforming in a poser / wannabe weirdo sense. You applaud this like it makes him special and a movie star? Loose definition for everything these days.

i'd never thought I'd see the day where I'd agree with /3rtful on anything...yet here we are.

Leto looks like a clown; I can't believe there are people taking his fashion choices (and him) seriously.

Fashion is ephemeral and expensive, style is timeless and always a good decision. The reason countless number of men wear suits like that to formal occasions is because they work, every single time. A tailored suit with a pressed dress shirt, clean dress shoes, and the right color/texture tie will always make a man look great. My own father was the dirtiest guy I knew, even HE cleaned up well in a suit. Its' not "exciting", but its infinitely preferable to lookin' like a giant tool like Jared Leto here.

Leto gets points for being bold, but the end result is too trendy, which in my opinion is worse than staid, whether it's a man or a woman. Of the four looks above, I prefer his Oscar ensemble, although I would wear that green coat in a second.

Joel Kinnaman: A- both times. Yum.

I don't mind Leto or his fashion choices. Why not wear some weird looking shit? I think he is infinately more interesting than Smith who has been in charisma freefall for a while - I'm inclined to think the biggest d-bag in the post is him, crisp suit or none.

August 9, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterchoog

Mr Kinnaman ( who I must goggle now) has a very classic movie star look- specially in the second shot.

August 9, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

Joel Kinnaman wins. Handsome and stylish.

Will does look like he is an associate at a law firm, or a CPA at a conference.

Jared ... that is not even fashion. Criminal. Thick white socks with the black Gucci shoes, dreadful.

Leto has a lot to make up for after unleashing the infamous man-bun on the masses.

August 9, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Jared Leto is fashionable and has style. The other guys just where appropriate clothes that someone tells them to wear. I'll take Jared Leto any day.

August 9, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDave in Hollywood

I mean, good on him for going there, but there's no accounting for taste.

Will and Joel look excellent, so... I really want Joel...'s tie.

August 9, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

Joel's... tie seems to be hiding in those brown pants. He seems to be trying out for the reboot of "Mad Men", not that there's anything wrong with that.

Jared is.. not boring? I'll give him that.

August 10, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterforever1267

I've come to find Jared Leto VERY irritating. I think he regards himself as the new Daniel Day-Lewis. Also, you're in your mid-forties, man... dress accordingly

thought the film experience was a leto-free zone.... :( :( :(

If Leto had had some sense of humor and self distance I think I would have liked his weird fashion sense.
I like your contrarian take. Too much Leto-bashing right now. And having no sense of humor is surely a horrible handicap.

August 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGena

If I believed that Leto genuinely marches to the beat of his own drummer, then most of his recent antics wouldn't bother me nearly as much; how and ever, everything he does appears to reek of desperation for attention, in which case he can return to 1994 and stay there. As for the matter of his sartorial choices, they're all terrible. Every single one.

August 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Jeremy - but that's the thing, so often actors are showing up in suits that don't work. It's crazy how often male movie stars get it wrong when this is a regular part of their job. 9 times out of 10 they look like mid-level bank managers in sloppy, badly-fitted suits. If these guys were stepping out in style every time, I'd agree with you. But considering how often they can't even get the basics right, I find it refreshing that actors like Leto (who I'm not otherwise a fan of) of Alan Cumming have some fun with their style.

August 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

I agree DJDeeJay, I do like it when actors have fun with fashion. A simple suit can look great on a man and I do think Joel looks good but a lot of actors can't get the fit right.

August 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJackie

That green coat though...I really want to buy that one for sure!

Joel is icy Scandinavian cool in everything

August 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterManuel

I agree to the first paragraph of DJDeeJay, but i disagree with the point of Leto as being the example of that especially comparing him with Cumming. Cumming, like Bonham Carter, has an inherent style related to his personality and attitude, and he doesn't need to proof someone. That's what makes unique Alan Cumming's style - Whatever you like it or not - is an extension of himself and look natural. Leto, on the other hand, instead making an effortless look, he always tends to OTT leaving a full "trying hard". Also, it didn't help his constant lack of humor and self awareness coming to his style. Mostly in line of "Look at me".

August 12, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterleon

@Leon - sure, that's fair. That's an insightful comparison between the two. I was just think of "guys who don't just wear normal suits" but you're right about the difference between them.
